If you need to organize and process pdfs, do you import the originals?

Unfortunately--

1. Pdfs have become the standard format for scans of older books, for scientific papers, for game rules, etc.

2. Most of the pdfs are incompatible with older e-readers.

3. Newer e-readers and tablets may be too small, incompatible with users' accessibility needs, and/or incompatible with users' budgets.

So I for one end up pre-processing pdfs for my Kindle Dx. So far, I avoid importing the originals, and only import the processed versions.

I assume some of you are in similar situations, so do you find it helpful to import the originals or not...?

Yes. I can't find a better place for them.

Definitely keep the originals! And calibre is a great place to store them alongside the device-suitable formats.

I run Calibre on my main hard drive. I keep the originals on another larger-but-slower drive, organized by source.

Every 4 GB, or if that is too small, every 8 GB , archive the original PDFs to DVD.
USB sticks that are 16/32/64GB in size are useful for archiving, but I haven't found a way to organize them, that is as easy and straightforward as the way I organize the DVD archives - write the contents on a label, and stick the label on the disk.

Discs are pretty good for archiving, true. I would go with Blue Ray though for capacity reasons (=less discs).

I'm pretty skeptical about flash storage for archiving - The NANDs don't hold the data reliable for too long...
