Download Limits
I just ran into a simultaneous downloads limit on a dictionary bought for my Kindles. Per Amazon download limits are set by publishers. A Collins English language dictionary. The limit is six readers simultaneously and I have considerably more Kindle readers. I understand that limits can vary from one to six copies or unlimited. Limits not listed in Amazon descriptions that I have found.
How do people feel about simultaneous download limit restrictions for units all registered to the same account? I can see it for a popular novel but it seems too restrictive for a reference book like a dictionary. Last edited by Richwood; 04-16-2020 at 11:38 AM. Reason: clarify |

Download limits for your purchased books should not exist. Period. But as long as we have to endure such a ridiculous restriction, removing the DRM is an absolute must (in my not so humble opinion).

I don't like download limits. I've run into the problem since I tend to download all my books onto a new reader and frequently forget to remove one of my old kindles from the list, but most books don't seem to have a limit. That's another reason to remove the DRM.

I find the download limits reasonable, but I can see it being a hassle for a reference book.

I don't think it's acceptable that the limits are not listed. Terms should be defined in advance of a purchase.

There is no "download limit". There's a simultaneous use limit (if the publisher requests it). And the limit is not at all new. In fact it used to be fairly standard on all kindlebook purchases.

Recently I have emailed personal documents to my Kindle, edited them and emailed them again and I have gotten that same message about a download limit. I don't know why there is a limit on personal documents. If I rename the document I can send it again and everything seems OK. If I remove the document from the Kindle and remove it from the amazon cloud, then it looks like I can email the document again. This does not happen on all my documents and I have not figured out why it happens.

It would seem to me that the population most likely to run into download limits is the avid reading population with a lot of different devices (duh!) And that population is the same population that would probably know how to remove DRM. The same population, after feeling taken advantage of, that would probably encourage/help efforts to learn how to remove future DRM schemes. So I'm not entirely sure why a publisher would want to set download limits - perhaps to encourage removal of DRM???

Seriously... why do people keep referring to this as a "download limit"? I'm genuinely curious.

It seems to me that only a tiny minority of avid readers even own six reading devices, let alone have six in active use at the same time.

Got it. Simple, shorter, and completely inaccurate is always better.

At the least, Amazon should make it easier to see (in Manage Your Content & Devices) what the limit for a given item is, how many devices it resides on, and a way to remove the item short of de-registering the device. It is possible to see what resides on a given device, but you have to retrieve per-device lists and then compute the totals from those.
