Converting PDF to Mobi error
I have a number of PDF books which I want to convert to Mobi. Both in Calibre and a PDFtoMobi program, both do the conversion but change numbers to a square as in Obersalzberg if by :
Any ideas what causes this?
Any help appreciated.

You'd have to post the PDF. I'm not sure about the conversion programs, but those squares are how some programs display unicode characters that they don't know the symbol for, e.g. in this case, U+F731, U+F730, U+F730, U+F730. I have no idea why the conversion program would convert numbers to those symbols. It would certainly depend on the source PDF itself.

Thanks. Out of interest, when I read the doc on Kindle in Mobi format, those squares have numbers in them, (very small) which you describe. This doesn't happen with every convert. I'll dig out an example.

Could they be those numbers that have descenders?

Checking the original text it appears to be numbers and capital letters. If I convert to RTF, these show up as blank spaces but converting to Mobi, they are shown as squares.
Obviously something in the PDF. Strange.

To be honest, converting from PDF like that is not going to go smoothly and the resultingfile will be full of errors. It's not worth the time and hassle to convert. Just find something you can use the read the PDF as is be it a tablet or computer.

Those are probably ligatures or such. Try to convert in some intermediate format and replace them accordingly.

I highly doubt that will make much of a difference if any. This converting is all a waste of time. PF is not meant for conversion like this. It's meant for reading on screen and/or printing on paper.
