combining rtf and cbr file
Hi Guys
Im relatively new to Calibre but have absolutely fell in love with this program and in reality, probably only use about 10% of its power. Everything so far has been self taught and quite intuitive. I do have one issue with book importing that I haven't quite found the ideal way to resolve. So I will try and explain as best I can and please excuse my english because it has been translated for me. I have recently received some ebooks that are in a RTF format but along with the RTF is a RAR file with the same filename as the RTF so for example. GoodBook.RTF and GoodBook.RAR So the rtf is just what you would assume it to be.. the bulk text of the book. The RAR on the other hand has 3 pictures in it. FrontCover.jpg BackCover.jpg Map.jpg When the RAR is imported using (ADD BOOKs) it is detected as a CBR file. As I understand it that is a comic book file and must be because it is only pictures. I have tried importing the cbr along side of the rtf so that they both reside under the one library entry - no good I have tried adding the rtf to the rar before import and convert to epub - no good I have used Word to edit the rtf and add the 3 pics from the RAR onto the first 3 pages of the RTF, then import and then convert - works but is not elegant or timely. So my question is how is the best way to use these 2 files together in the least amount of steps with the greatest usability. Thanks in advance for your advice and solutions. |

What you're asking is can calibre merge text and comic formats with a click or two?
The answer is no. What you've done - add the images to the RTF with Word is as good any way, especially if you're familiar with Word. How will you read the book? If you need to convert to an ebook format for an e-reader device or an android/ios app I recommend saving as DOCX and converting that. BR |

Thank you for your response. I guess I will have to do it that way but it kind of sucks because there is like 100 books. Maybe the developer will add it in a future release. It looks like he pretty much thought of everything else you could want to do.

I suggest you complain to the creator of the books.
I've never come across an e-bookmaker who would think of creating a book as an rtf and a rar, and I doubt there would be any e-book stores that would accept them into their store. BR Last edited by BetterRed; 02-19-2020 at 09:08 PM. |

Does the RTF file contain any placeholders for where the images must go?

It sounds similar, though not identical, to what you see on Windows when examining a macOS RTFD document as produced in TextEdit. These are bundled (ZIP) collections of a RTF document, with the images omitted, and a set of the placed images.

there used to be an internet explorer option to save a html page - some sort of save all- that would put all the images into a subfolder, alongside of a file with all the text in, but it did not call it rtf.
maybe your "books" are actually grabs of html versions , badly saved ? there's no way that calibre, or any other program, can put humpty dumpty back together again without some saved info defining where the images need to go |

@itimpi - according to dwig, the RTFD objects are created by the macOS program Text Edit, last time I looked they belonged to Apple. Much like the .DStore folders that users of Windows, Linux, BSD Unix, z/OS and everything in between have to get rid of when they get a zip archive from an Apple machine. Yes, I know MacOS users can prevent this, but most don't even know they even exist.

The digression into Apple's sins was amusing though AFAIR, Microsoft was responsible for RTF and Microsoft's implementation had some rather strange ways of embedding images.
However, since the OP had an RTF file and the images in a .RAR archive, this would suggest that it was either it was not created by TextEdit on a Mac or someone repackaged the .zip container file. Last edited by DNSB; 02-20-2020 at 06:25 PM. |

I give up. Yes, Microsoft developed the MacOS operating system, and the TextEdit text editor, and then donated them to Apple so they can install them on their computers so that their users can create RTFD documents. And, for good measure Microsoft invented EBCDIC and paper tape - happy?.
