Best epub reader app?

What is the best epub ereader app for iOS, or the iPad in particular?
DRM support not needed.
Is using the Apple Application on Windows or Mac needed to copy the epub ebooks?

I've no access to a Mac or an iPad, but some readers have them.

If I borrow an iPad can I copy ebooks to it from Linux direct, or do they have to be uploaded to the owner's Apple Cloud account.

Sorry for asking clueless questions. I can't test stuff on the iPhone 4s I was given as it's impossible to add even old versions of Apps and no current store apps will install. I did figure how to copy MP3s to it from Linux, but the built in player only plays those transferred by the Apple application on Win7. You need a 3rd party player, unfortunately the previous owner only added games while the 4s was still supported.

There are several apps including the one from Apple. Which you choose is likely just a preference for some feature or what format you prefer for reading. Many eBook Readers have versions for the iPad that can read their books.

You generally need a target app to provide books, However Dropbox can be used to transfer books.

For a list of available apps see E-book_software#iPhone_and_iPad our wiki.

So can you copy a book via USB to the iPad without an Internet connection and which iOS and which host desktop OS will allow it?

Yes, using iTunes and Apple Books. You sync your iPad and then look under the device for books.

Apps support Calibre can also load books.
