Buying a brand-new Kindle bought in 2020

Found someone on eBay selling a Paperwhite 10th Generation bought in 2020, it's still sealed.

I'm sure the firmware on it will be jailbreakable but will I be able to set it up without WiFi (so no firmware update) to initially jailbreak it or will it require WiFi and hence a firmware update?

Do not buy this. It's a PW4. The screen is terrible. It's fuzzy and muddy. Amazon really botched the PW4 screen.

It's not that bad, but slightly poorer than a PW3 on a side by side comparison. Worth it if 1/2 price of new PW an you have no other eink ereader.

If you real absolutely must have "jailbreak" then buy a Kobo, because it doesn't need a "jailbreak". Also though you can install and re-configure and patch, it doesn't need it!

The best use of a Kindle is to register via WiFi so you can buy and download ebooks and read them on anything.

No, it isn't. It's perfectly fine. And any device can be a good value at the right price and if one's basic requirements are met.

With minimal lighting, the PW4 screen is murkier than the PW3. But once the light is set to a reasonable level, it's, again, perfectly fine. And it has advantages/refinements over the PW3, also. It all depends on one's priorities. It's also much newer than the PW3 and is the most recent 6" Paperwhite, arguments in themselves for preferring it to the PW3.

Sigh. It's one thing to point out drawbacks, but it would be much better if you didn't resort to value judgments, most especially since you have a tendency to be unwilling to see more than one (your own) side.

Full disclosure: I read on a PW4 most days and it's /gasp!/ enjoyable!

it should be possible to skip connecting to wifi. There might be a "skip" link to tap, or tapping outside the dialog box might work.

If the dialog is unskippable, don't connect to wifi until barely in range. then throughput will be so low that there won't be time for anything bad to happen. Then get into airplane mode ASAP!
