Calibre and kindle cloud

Hey guys new user here who just picked up a kindle paperwhite. I have a couple mobi files that I transferred to the kindle using send to by email. It worked great as the mobi's also showed up on my iPad and iPhone kindle app. The only problem was there were no page numbers. So instead I used calibre to transfer the mobi's via USB. Now my books have page numbers, but they don't appear on my other devices or in the kindle cloud. What should I be doing to fix this? Thanks guys!

That is just the ways it works. MOBI files do not include page numbers.

When calibre transfers a MOBI to a Kindle over USB it creates a separate APNX file that contains page numbers for the MOBI. There is no way to include the APNX file when sending via email so emailed books do not include page numbers.

I wouldn't worry about it. Most books sold by Amazon do not include page numbers. That is the normal state of things.

The e-books should not contain page numbers.

Not on a device with variable font sizes, line spacing, margins and a fixed size display.
Similar to a stopped clock, which shows the correct time twice a day (unless you are in the military - when it is only correct once a day) - the page numbers, if included, would be wrong more often than they where correct.

Well iBooks handles page numbers in ePubs intelligently, i.e. it recalculates the pages whenever you change the font size or other parameters. But on the Kindle, all I get is "Loc" which I really don't know means what, and you don't see the total # of "Loc"s unless you press the top of your kindle screen.

I tried to recovert my books to MOBI using the settings from here, but I still can't get page #s to appear when I transfer them via Calibre. Am I doing something wrong? Maybe I'm confused when it says to "sideload to Kindle via USB". What exactly does sideloading mean?

iBooks is for devices running iOS or MacOS.
Both of which are used on devices with a lot more available resources than the Kindles.

"Sideload" :: Do not go through Amazon's servers, transfer using the local USB cable.

Sorry, we can't troubleshoot other sites directions -
If you have a question on something reddit posted, ask reddit.

PS: The question is about the Kindles that run Android, which your grayscale Kindle is not running, only the color screen Kindles come with Android installed.

Ok thanks for the explanation. So basically what I'm looking for is a way to transfer MOBI or AZW3 files to the kindle paperwhite, but to also enable:
- book covers
- page numbers
- whispersync (reading progresss across devices)

Is this simply impossible with my device?

Sure.
Just purchase from the Amazon store.

Are you familar with the term: "Vendor Lock-in"?

= = = =

I am the wrong person to try answering this question, I do not use the features or third-party softwares involved.

If you want to know something about the internals - that is I.
But I only recently learned that Kindles can be used to display e-books, when I thought all you could do with them was take them apart.

To my knowledge, yes. You can have page numbers OR whispersync, but not both.

and which are the various ways to enable both? I'm getting a bit confused by all the different sync to device options and why something as simple as page numbers cannot be displayed on a freaking ebook reader!

Page numbers: use the Page Count plugin in Calibre (you can configure the plugin the way you like) and send to your Kindle from Calibre (via USB)

Whispersync: the simplest way is to use the Send-to-Kindle app (https://www.amazon.com/gp/sendtokindle/pc)

1 Loc == 256 bytes of uncompressed book content. (Since this includes any embedded markup this is not actually the same as what appears on the screen.)

I'm having trouble with the Page Count plugin working... It said it finished counting pages for one of my books, which I then re-converted to MOBI and sent to my Kindle via Calibre using USB. However the book is still missing page numbers now. Can anyone please point me towards the proper settings for this plugin? And also the MOBI output settings I should be using?

Thanks very much.

You're far more likely to get help with Calibre issues if you ask in the Calibre forum, rather than here.

Sorry to bump this thread but it's the best one I found for my issue. This thread answers the question about page numbers but not the other question about cloud.

I'm using Calibre as my main book storage but since I've got both a Kindle and iOS devices with the Kindle app I want to ensure that books I send to Kindle ends up in Kindle Cloud (and where I can manage them from amazon.com/manageyourkindle).

If I use "Connect/share" > "Email to..." it ends up in Kindle cloud and can be downloaded to my devices. If I plug in my Kindle with USB and selects "Send to device" it ends up on my Kindle but not in Kindle cloud.

Is this the expected behavior? Maybe this isn't a Calibre question but rather a Kindle question? I'm trying to manually sync my device and every change in the cloud is synced to my Kindle but nothing on my Kindle syncs to the cloud.

Is my only option to use "Email to..." instead of just copying with USB?

Thanks!

Yes. You need to send to the cloud in order to have it sync. Books side loaded to individual devices do not sync.
