Title Page in Calibre

Hello. I have just started using Calibre to create MOBI files and am getting some weirdness on my title pages. The text, although appearing normal in my original Word document, is aligned vertically, thus:
M
Y
B
O
O
K
T
I
T
L
E

When I view the book in the Kindle app on my iPod, the same text is all bunched up in the upper right hand corner, with lots of undesired line breaks. I tried saving my Word document as RTF, and the results were different, but not what I wanted. Even though the title was centered in Word, it now showed up in Calibre justified left. Can anyone help me with this?

How did you 'format' the text in Word; if you're using the default template try applying its "Title" style to the title text.

If you want to centre it horizontally and/or vertically Modify the Title style.

MOBI is needed by very old Kindle e-readers. You may be able to use AZW3, which supports better and more flexible formatting. Alternatively, install on your iPod something that works with EPUB, which also has better and more flexible formatting than MOBI, and convert to that.

Thank you so much for your kind responses. As suggested, I changed the formatting in Word to "Title" and also in Calibre saved it as a AZW3 file. That did the trick with the title, which now appears as it should.

However, there is a new wrinkle. Some of the body text has unusual line breaks. For instance the sentence "Yes, I really am." appears as:

Yes,
I really
am.

In Word, it is formatted as "Body Text" and when viewing it with the paragraph icons, there are no line break symbols within the sentence. This problem appears whether it's an EPUB or AZW3 file.

Any ideas?

Now you see why I never wish for WYSWYG , because it is a lie
It is what you can't see, that will drive you crazy.

For you first post: margin-right:95%; could force that because there is only enough room for 1 letter.

for the previous post, the right margin may not be that small, but coupled with no hyphenation, would reduce the space text could appear so only 1 word fits

Thank you for the reply. I need to clarify that most lines display as expected. It's just a few short lines that are doing this.

I have on rare occasion used Word. Thus, I know I can (and did) make a horrific mess out of individual Paragraph margins when trying to make a change to someone elses work.

You may have started with a great template, but gremlins (or Cats) can strike when you were not looking.

At this point, I would just fix the EPUB in the Editor (unless this was a really frequent error), as it took longer to write this topic, than do the 'repair'
EPUB level HTML/CSS is not really that hard.
Now (PCRE) REGEX is a bit more Arcane, but well worth learning also.

Most often when I've seen this it's because there are br tags where you're seeing line breaks. Which is another way of saying that I agree with theducks; you'll need to use the calibre editor on the AZW3 and figure out what's wrong and fix it.
