Upgrade from Kindle Keyboard?

I've been using the Kindle Keyboard forever (3rd gen?), and it has served me well, and still going strong.

I'm not sure what's new and improved from that version to today (kindlewhite 10?). But is it worthwhile to upgrade?

My only complaint with the kindle keyboard is that you can get a bit of glare off the screen if the light hits it at certain angles. Other than that, it's great.

So, in terms of overall changes, how has the screen improved in terms of glare, etc?

The screen of the new Paperwhite 4 is higher resolution, faster, and has better contrast. Plus, you get a touch screen instead of the keyboard and you get the latest operating system with all of the features. So yes, it is time to do away with your Kindle Keyboard. However, if you want a larger screen (I like a larger screen), you can go for the Kindle Oasis 3.

Well, I wouldn't "do away" with the Kindle Keyboard. For some reason my newer Kindles choke on "Send to Kindle" documents, whereas my Kindle Keyboard has no issue at all with them.

In terms of glare nothing has really changed. I also don't really buy the "increased contrast" claim. If it is true it's barely perceptible. The real differences are the increased resolution and the backlit screen. The former certainly does look nicer, but unless you read on the smallest font size it's not really going to make much of a difference to you. The latter is just a matter of personal choice as to whether you want it or not.

To each their own. I wouldn't want to go back to my old Kindles. When I compare the screen of my Voyage/Oases/Nook/Kobo to my unlit Kindles from 2011-2012, there is a world of difference. Of course it also depends on where you live. In a sunny climate, in bright daylight, the difference is probably minimal. In a cloudy northern climate with long, dark winters the difference is huge.

Well I did say "matter of personal choice"...

Well that describes where I live pretty much and I don't really need a lit screen. I have these other things called electric lights so I don't have to sit there in darkness all winter. They even work with paper books.

it describes where I live too. I would chance to say that the ereaders in general use far less electricity than those electric lights you speak of. and there are some that are sensitive to bright electric lights and have lower lighting. I'd rather read on my devices with nice lighting in lower light than in a brightly lit room.

and then there are older eyes. you may not be there yet.

the best answer might be to get one and try it. don't get rid of what's working for you just yet. the current PW4 has pluses and minuses as do all ereaders. they are on sale right now so it might be a good time to give one a go.

Exactly. I don't want my rooms to be lit like a ballroom all the time in winter, and nothing less really suffices to make the older screens look as nice as the newer are. I like to read in a cozily dim room in the evening. The frontlight + the comfort light (neither cranked all the way up, of course) make the eink screen very nice and readable.

Yes, there are portable reading lights, but they're still not as good as a frontlit screen.

agree on all points. reading lights were fine in their day, but they are not for me these days. my eyes really couldn't take them.

You don't have to buy it, but there is increased contrast. I've seen it. But, the new screens are of higher resolution and that makes a noticeable difference.

Just don't turn the font light up past where it's a bother. My mother-in-law has her front light up past where it would be comfortable for me. EVeryone is different. Set to what works for you.
