I spent hours yesterday "buying" all these free eBooks from Amazon. I ended up with 144 of them! All were free. I think I have enough reading on history in my collection now!

Has anyone started reading any of these yet? If, so what are your impressions?

Some of the reviews leave me apprehensive that they get a lot of facts wrong, are poorly written, and full of typos.

I know that when someone writes a book for popular consumption, nitpickers swoop in to slam it for not being what it was never meant to be, but I'm wondering whether these are worth bothering with at all.

They are good for what they are which is a brief introduction to the subject. I will usually check the additional reading in the bibliography for a fuller overview.

Since they are written as books for hire and the people writing them are not necessarily familiar with the subject they do occasionally get the facts incorrect or attribute them to the wrong person when the book covers multiple people. Poorly written is in the eye of the beholder and I would not use these for lessons if I was a teacher but they are readable. Typos? I've tried reading books from the big five publishers that had so many typos they were unreadable. So while there are some it is no more than any other book I've read or tried to read.
