Series information on Pocketbook Touch HD 3
For the most part I have found that the series information listed in Calibre translates correctly over to my new Pocketbook, however I've seen a few issues that I can't explain, and was hoping there was a non-obvious answer to that I have so far overlooked.
Scenario 1: I have two books in Calibre, that have correct series metadata. So essentially:
When I send them to the device, both books arrive, but only one arrives with the series. The other is treated as if it has no series information at all. Scenario 2: I have a series with an intermediate entry marked as 2.50. So essentially:
When I send them to the device, all four books arrive, but the book marked as 2.50 is listed as book 2, and the book marked as 2 is treated as if it has no series information at all. Scenario 3: I have The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, with the Hobbit having no series information. So essentially:
When I send them to the device, all four books arrive, but The Hobbit is somehow marked as being part of the Lord of the Rings series. It has no series index associated with it, it is just treated as if it were the 0th entry in the series. This last scenario makes me suspect that there may be somewhere else that the Pocketbook is pulling the series information from than just the metadata sent by Calibre, but I cannot figure out where. I could not find anywhere in The Hobbit epub itself that listed it as part of the Lord of the Rings, but I may have missed something. Any light that could be shed would be wonderful. I have dug deeper and found series metadata tags within the .opf file embedded in The Hobbit (and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer as well coincidentally), which explains Scenario 3. I still cannot explain why certain books with series information in Calibre are not carrying that information over when sent to device.

Because the device is failing to read that information from the epub file. Most likely because it is epub 3 and the device firmware does not know how to read series from epub 3 files.

Thank you!
Two of the books I was having issues with were clearly EPUB3 on inspection, and a conversion to EPUB2 solved the series issue. A third looked like it was EPUB2, but I converted it anyway and that likewise solved the issue. Sidenote for anyone who finds this thread in the future: sending a MOBI to device instead of an EPUB will also cause this issue. The fourth however remains sticky. It's definitely not an EPUB3, and just to be sure I re-converted it directly from MOBI in Calibre and re-sent it to the device, but the issue persisted. Is there anything else that could cause the device to fail to read series information off an EPUB? I noticed the device could not read the description either (which I confirmed as existing in the .opf inside the .epub file), although it read the title, author, and cover just fine; not sure if that is relevant or not. |

You'd have to ask the developers of the device firmware, I've never even laid eyes on one of these devices.
