PRS700 Security Anomoly or Inconvenience?
I do carry some private documents in my 700 so I enabled the pass lock.
Upon doing this, you can not sync the device nor does it give you the option of unlocking while docked. One must fully DISABLE the 'security' in settings prior to docking, then undock when finished updating and then re-enable the 'security' feature. If you are going to carry secure docs in your PRS700, do not store them on memory card, as this is easily compromised by using any mem-card reader. Put your doc's in internal memory and the rest of none security files on memory card. I think Sony should address this as it doesn't make the best use of this feature. comments? I think I wasn't clear enough. Its not whether or not you wish to store
secure documents on your reader, its whether the option to do so is possible while using the built in pass lock on the device. The current Rom/Firmware does not allow proper usage as you will have to remember to disable the security every time you wish to sync. That can't be right. |

I think this would be a question for you to pose to Sony tech support -- there might be a way that isn't explained properly in the manual, or there might not be a way other than what you've discovered, in which case Sony might change things in a firmware update if enough people ask for the change.

I'm guessing that if the security automatically switched off when docked, then anyone with a PC could bypass security merely by docking and using the PC to browse the documents on the reader.

NOPE.
If lost, and docs are stored in internal memory, then no access unless you input passcode. If you re-read my first post, I mentioned you can not dock with security enabled. |

I'm sorry I don't think I made myself clear.
I meant to say that I think Sony deliberately designed it so that you can't dock when security is enabled, otherwise you could merely bypass the security by docking. Of course the Sony library software could be made to work even when docked, but as anyone can download this, then again it would mean that the security could be easily bypassed. So I assume this is why with the security enabled you can't dock. One solution would be to only allow docking to registered PCs; this is getting more complicated so I guess the Sony developers took the easy option and decided to disable docking. But I can see how it must be a real pain in the proverbial. |

has to be implemented in the next image update. There is no (logical) reason why you can't dock with security already enabled. The only thing that was be '@risk' would naturally be files left on the memory card themselves. Of course, sony could introduce readable encryption but that might be pushing the envelope ![]() Quote:
registering the PC. They must have this security while docked update in the pipelines. The next flash update will have a nice varity of enhancement (including more speed, and perhaps tweeked file handling) |
