4.0 navigation issues

Morning. Love your work, long-time user, few time commenter. I'm running Win10 and I realized you can no longer ALT+TAB when the viewer is in full screen. It makes for a very weird experience where you can't focus on the app and you are just tabbing through your other open windows. A few times now I've ended up closing my other apps (ALT+F4) and eventually getting back to the viewer. You can't just click the viewer on the screen to get the focus back.

Also, you can't hit ESC to exit full screen on the viewer. I know F11 does the same thing but my left hand is very used to the majority of my commands. It's very disconcerting when you start hitting extra keys to get out and then realize you've lost focus on the viewer. I've ended up in the last few days closing everything else I was working on blindly just to get back to the viewer. Thankfully nothing was unsaved cause then I know it'd be lost having to force a shutdown.

Not sure what you mena, on my win10 system after entering fullscreen I can alt+tab to another application, then alt+tab back to the fullscreened viewer.


And pressing Esc brings up the viewer controls, where there is a button you can use to exit full screen.

You ae running a now obsolete version of Calibre. There have been some enhancements and a number of fixes since 4.0. 4.2 is the current version. Try that and then report back if you still have a problem.

If I have these settings - I think these are the relevant ones:



If I press F11 to get into full screen, and then Winkey+Tab, I get this:



If I press F11 to get into full screen, and then PrntScrn (which fires up Snip and Sketch), I get this



If I press any global key used by Windows, the text goes from full screen width, to the width of the viewer when its not full screen as can been seen above. the way out of the 'mess' is to hit F11, twice.

I can't get a Snip and Sketch screen shot with Alt+Tab pressed, but you should be able to work out what happens.

And I agree with the OP, Escape is the most common way to exit full screen, e.g. Youtube , Facebook, Twitter, etc, and image and video viewer apps.

Added: I never raised any of this before because I never read full screen, and if I want to read, as opposed to have a quick look at, something on desktop I use another viewer via Open With, e.g. Edge (for now) or the 3.48 viewer.

Fullscreen alt+tab does not work. It keeps the viewer in front almost like it's set for 'always on top' but doesn't show the switcher window and just tabs between whatever else may be open.

I should've been more clear this morning. I cannot exit out of full screen hiting the ESC key without using my mouse.

It was a typo from this morning. I am on 4.2 and was running it when I posted it. It's been an issue since 4.0. I should've titled the thread 4.x.

On my current machine,

alt-tab brings up the switcher screen in front of the viewer and works as expected.

Is this changing widths or simply going back to the initial opening of the book on the cover page? When I Win-Tab my book reverts to the initial page it started on. When I select the book again it looks like it starts back on the initial page but a page turn forward and back reveals that it is back in the position it was when I initially hit Win-Tab. But it doesn't initially refocus on the spot you were at so it seems screwy until you move the page forward and back. Seems like a bug to me.

It does for me.

I should've been more clear this morning. I cannot exit out of full screen hiting the ESC key without using my mouse.

Hit the esc key twice then hit F11

When I hit a key combination used by Windows, e.g. Win+Tab, Ctrl+Esc, Win+I, Win+A, Alt+Tab etc the text goes from full width to original window width as shown in my screen shots. I don't know what would happen if I had multiple columns - which I would if I actually wanted to read full screen with the V4 viewer, and I knew how to get them.

When I have the version 4 viewer in full screen mode I lose the Ctrl+space menu, if I get a notify, from Windows Alarm, Mail, Skype etc I don't see it (I have sound muted most of the time). These things work when watching a video in Firefox full screen, or reading an epub full screen in Edge or the v3.48 viewer - i.e. I get the control menu and see the reminder to take my meds

Press F11 to enter full screen, press Esc to exit, press Ctrl+F11 to hide/show controls, all the Windows shortcut keys works as they should, including Alt+Space, and Notifies pop up as they should. the only visual difference is the presence of a scroll bar.

I can't even get a screen shot of the new viewer using Windows Snip and Sketch - soon as a press the print screen button it goes skew-whiff.

@BR: Since you have explicitly changed the preference in Page mode to show only a single column, it is not surprising you are getting only a single column. Set ti back to zero and you will get multiple columns.

Strange, I don't experience this when I alt-tab, win-tab etc... (even when I choose 1 column) it stays the full width, full screen no matter how many times I switch apps.

Sorry I can't help, but my Windows Snip and Sketch tool works fine as does my print screen function copy the full screen to the clipboard without altering what I'm viewing.

I'm not trying to be difficult here but it's a fresh install of Win10 with calibre, Firefox, Chrome, Notepad++ and Adobe CC installed. I know it's weird but imagine my surprise after doing a fresh install on a PC on 10/6 to download calibre and find out it's now hit v4.0. Oh, Dropbox (gotta keep that library synced). It is not working properly. For good measure, I went in the preferences. Reset everything to default (I hadn't changed anything anyway) restarted calibre and still no ALT+TAB / Winkey+ TAB / double ESC to exit out of the viewer. Wait WinSCP, PuTTY, Keepass. I went and checked this time. JIC someone tried to blame it on something funky.

Which gives me multiple columns in non-full screen mode which I don't like, and I get 5 skinny newspaper like columns in full screen, which I also don't like - I managed to get a screen shot with another tool.



Maybe some of the glitches are related to my Dell S2417DG WQHD 2560 × 1440 monitor - which is not one of the 'common' resolutions.

Added: I set landscape to 3 which is what I had in the old viewer, which is better, it still misbehaves when I use Windows shortcuts and I still don't see the control menu when I press Alt+space, but I discovered if I then press C the viewer closes, and if I then press N it minimises - so the control menu is there, but its invisible.

I don't really want to get into a discussion about it - I don't mind if all tools don't do everything.
