Syncing books

If ebook(s) have been loaded to the Kobo by Calibre or by side-loading, are they wiped out by syncing with kobo.com?

Once while experimenting, I ended up with 11 books showing 3 copies (1 epub, 1 kepub and 1 synced from Kobo).

Wow, that's surprising. I thought I was asking a dumb question with folks saying "Of course those books are wiped out".

Really good news to hear.

I set up a separate email account/connection with kobo.com that contains no books so that when I connect via wifi it only syncs if there are version upgrades. I have no intention of changing my setup -- I was asking the question for someone else.

Syncing won't wipe sideloaded books on any ereader I've used. Not on Kobo, not on Kindle and not on Nook.

OTOH, Nooks are somewhat notorious for wiping sideloaded content for unknown reasons.

AFAIK it was the unfortunate Glowlight 3 that suffered from that problem and even then not all of those. At least I haven't heard of it happening with other Nook models.

One acquaintance has had sideloaded books disappear on his 7.8" Nook on several occasions. It makes sideloading an anxious occasion which is even worse since it is not consistent. The solution—for him—was ordering a Kobo Forma to replace his Nook.

Did your acquaintance use Calibre for sideloading or simply drag-and-drop?

To be fair, it shouldn't matter.

Though BNs "genius" move to up the version of android on their eink devices resulted in some less than great issues, this may or may not have pre-dated the GL3.

I have long ago given up on trying to figure out the drunken mess that is BNs marketing deptartments idea of a naming convention. At least Amazon has sort of done better by using years now.

Of course it shouldn't, but by all accounts it does matter.

Actually it's in the same category as the Kindle indexing problems. I have never had any book stuck indexing that's converted by Calibre and sideloaded from the same. In the ideal world, nothing ever should be stuck indexing. But of course we don't live in the ideal world. Kobo also has had its share of bugs.

He originally used copy and paste (should be the same as drag and drop) and then switched to calibre on my recommendation since he was complaining about managing 400 ebooks in his library. It happened with both and, as mentioned earlier, was inconsistent. At lease with a consistent problem, you have a chance at finding the root cause but an erratic problem is a total bear to troubleshoot. He still uses the Nook for some reading since he does love the wide bezels but the Forma is now his go-to device since he moved his library backup in Dropbox into the Forma accessible folder.

Anybody knows if using the kobo forma dropbox cloud is possible to sync sideloaded books highligts and anotations between the ereader and the kobo ios and android app?

@rocepime: No. It's basically wireless sideloading, period.

He has used both and had issues with both. What seems to help is after copying the books, he leaves his Nook connected for 10 - 15 minutes before ejecting.
