The body of an attractive young woman is found in a country lane; she had been short through the head. The case is difficult, and Scotland Yard is called in. Chief Constable Richardson supervises the investigation, while Inspector Dallas and others do all the leg work, both in UK and France.

As usual with a Richardson case, the emphasis is on the teamwork of a number of detectives and specialists, rather than a single charismatic detective.

I couldn't find an original first edition cover, so made one up using a contemporary photograph of an Austin 12, a car which features strongly in the case. I photoshopped in the (fictitious) registration number worn by the car in the book. (The number itself is also relevant to the story.)
