Buy a new Kobo, or try a Kindle
Hi.
I have a Kobo h2o first gen, and I don't have exactly the need, but the desire for an upgrade... I want a new toy in short ![]() I really like the new Libra, but I'm also tempted by the Kindle Oasis, hoping it will be discounted during Black Friday lol I have always sideloaded my books with Calibre so it wouldn't be a problem to convert them to Azw or what is the format supported by the Kindle. I like the flexibility of Kobo, but I have a prime account with kindle unlimited (in Italy is included in the subscription, even if with a less extensive archive ) and with a Kindle I could use it... What I would like to know is, in the Kindle the reading is similar to the reading with Kobo? Have I the possibility of importing fonts, knowing the percentage of reading, how much time I need to finish the book etc? And, now my books are all organized by genres with tags, can I have the books on the Kindle organized in the same way? For those who have tried both software, which one do you like better and why? (Big question I know lol, but apart from an old nook I've always had kobo e-readers and I'm curious to know the pros and cons) Thanks! Last edited by perisiana; 09-10-2019 at 07:22 PM. |

Oh, I want to add that I don't read PDF or comics usually, and that I'm starting reading some books in English and I love the fact that you can translate sentences in Kindle, is the translation good enough?

No. The Kindle doesn't read genres or tags. You can create collections manually and put your books in those. But there is no automatical arrangement. |

That's annoying. So, a few years ago I remember converting books for a Kindle for a friend, and I had to enter the isbn code in Calibre metadata to show covers and descriptions on kindle... This is because the Kindle does not support metadata right? Last edited by perisiana; 09-10-2019 at 07:44 PM. |

Thanks for the information, I think I'll stay with Kobo though.I had a nook simple touch, my first e-reader, which worked in the same way with metadata, and I hated it...
It's a shame though, showing the synopsis without opening the books and having the automatic tags would be easy to do, most apps do it. |

I find the kindle translation feature to be useful. Not because I read other than english, but because authors often want to show off by adding sentences in other languages. I would imagine if you were reading a second language it would be far more useful!

Organising sideloaded books on a Kindle is horrible. If you can jailbreak the Kindle, you can install koreader and easily organize books into folders. AFAIK you can not jailbreak new kindles.
BTW koreader can be installed on kobos. |

I'm considering having Kobo Libra as a Christmas present and buying a Paperwhite maybe during black Friday if there is a big discount.
I downloaded Calibre-go which is great for viewing ebooks I have in my calibre library, even better than Calibre companion in my opinion, but I don't like the idea of not being able to use tags and synopsis (without opening the books) on the e-reader that I use every day. Also the fact that if I open a book just for look at the synopsis this messes with my reading history makes my OCD go crazy. My closet and my house can be a mess but my e-reader must always be on point lol Instead I would use the Paperwhite for books in English using the translation, and to take advantage of Kindle unlimited. In the end I did the math and a kobo libra + a discounted kindle Paperwhite would cost me roughly like the Oasis ![]() |

I had thought of putting Android on my old kobo mini and installing the Kindle app but I think I understand that it would be a useless job, since I should install gingerbread, no thanks lol Then, actually when I installed Android on my old nook I spent more time searching for apps that looked good on the e-ink screen than reading. Instead these days I will install koreaders on the mini, I'm curious. |

But you don't need KOReader on a Kobo to be able to use Collections. Collection can be managed using Calibre.

You can get Kindle Unlimited books to convert in Calibre as well with the proper plugin if that's the primary feature Kindle has going for them in your case.
