Question 7.8" eReader to replace 2015 Nook (no Kindles)

Hey folks,

Looking for a reader to replace my 2015 Nook Glowlight Plus. I've had the thing since day one, tweaked it along the way (Woo Novalauncher / Moon+) and last month it died the final death. No longer takes a charge, screen unresponsive. As the good Doctor once said: he's dead, Jim.

So I'm looking for something to stick in my bag while I'm out, or at work. Tablets and smartphones are right out but the boss man is okay with eReaders for some reason.

Here's the helpful bits
  • Location: USA
  • Budget: 150-200 USD (refurbished /second hand hardware is A-okay.)
  • Preferred Screen Size: 7.8" (The higher resolution the better. This possum's blind as a bat)
  • Storage: 8gb+ (Size does matter, after all...)
  • Want to Haves:
    Physical Controls
    Cool White backlight
Robust organization options (category, tags, etc.)
    Overdrive support.
  • Nice to Haves:
    Expandable storage
Ability to side load apps / a mature custom firmware
User serviceable battery ("Jolly idiot with a soldering iron serviceable" works too)
Snappy hardware. (Perhaps it was my own stupidity in play, but my Glowlight felt sluggish when reading even light/small .ePubs or playing Chess.)
    .lit support
  • Prefer not to Haves:
Kindle. I'd rather avoid that ecosystem, thanks.

Help me, Mobile-Read Kenobi, you're my only hope.

Kobo Forma, if you can relax your budget; Kobo Libra if your budget is solid and you're prepared to compromise on size. If neither but you don't need buttons, maybe look into a secondhand Kobo Aura One?

(I'm very much prioritising your Want to Haves over your Nice to Haves here.)

Being in the US, Kobo is your best bet as meera said.

With that, your only choice is a Kobo. And the Forma is the closest on the other details. Or a second-hand Aura ONE.

You might want to look at the Pocketbook Inkpad 3. A little above your budget. Not sure how it handles the organization of files. It doesn't have Overdrive integration, but it might work like the Tolino where you can use the built-in browser to download Overdrive books directly to the reader.
