Device: PRS-T1
Replacement for Sony PRS-T1

After nearly a decade together, I foolishly stepped on my PRS-T1 this morning and fatally damaged the screen. I am considering this an opportunity to upgrade, but in my limited research I haven't been terribly thrilled with the direction the industry has taken.

How I used my T1:
  • Sideloaded .epub files via Calibre.
  • Rooted the device and installed an alternate homescreen app to replace the default Sony homescreen.
  • Rooted the device and installed coolreader as an alternate reader app to replace the default Sony reader.

Trends I'm not thrilled with:
  • Doing away with hardware buttons or, for the few devices where they remain, moving them to the side bezel. In particular I liked being able to hold the device from the bottom and use the hardware page turn buttons.
  • Wider bezels in general.
  • Non-Android operating systems (I am an Android developer and I liked being able to load apps from the ecosystem or write or edit my own apps if I had to). I particularly like coolreader as my main reader app.

Things I would mind upgrading:
  • I read with the lights on currently, but having a built in light sounds nifty.
  • Reliable wi-fi and downloading of content, particularly periodicals. I wouldn't mind being the kind of person who reads The Economist for the articles, and not the lewd photos of Fed Chairmen.
  • Faster screen refresh and navigation.
  • USB-C port. My phone made the switch a few years ago now, and I wouldn't mind continuing to unify my devices on USB-C.

I'm wondering if there's a device that would represent a meaningful upgrade, or if I'm better off just buying another T1 off ebay and considering this morning a $60 blunder.

Thanks

I had a T1. I have a Kobo Aura H20 now and I would never go back. I suggest getting the new Kobo Libra H20. It's a 7" screen.
  • Hardware buttons
  • 7" Carta screen for better contrast and fast response
  • Faster
  • Handles hi-res images much better
  • Newer version of RMSDk
  • Can install KOReader or Coolreader but there's really no need
  • Collections can be managed with Calibre just like the T1
  • Overdrive support
  • user font support
  • 300DPI
  • and more

I would not go with another T1 as it is slow and doesn't play ne with high-res images

Just another research suggestion, look at Pocketbook HD 3. I have one, and kobo clara hd, but not kobo Libra. Pocket book hd3 will have the buttons in a similar location as your T1 did. Cool reader is a choice as well on pocketbook Touch HD3

Just suggesting you look. I’m also intrigued by the Libra, but I still like slipping my device in a pocket, the larger size of the Libra, for me, might not be ideal.

The Libra is not really that much larger then yur average 6" Reader with large bezel.

Again, that’s just me.
Pocketbook touch hd3, 161x108x8
Kobo Libra, 159x144x5 to 7.8

That jjjuusstt a little bit wider would for me, mean not fitting in many pockets. I’d probably love a Libra anyway, lol.

I don't know if a T2 would suit your needs, but someone is selling white T2s (which came from a library) for $22, which includes shipping.

Even if you're looking to buy something newer, you might want to pick one of those up at that price. Of course I don't know anything about jail breaking these. That might make the T1 more valuable for you then a T2.

Good luck. Sorry about your T1.

Whoa, nice find. I ordered one as a backup for my current T2. I don't know why, but I seem to like the old school readers better. Something about the tactile feel and design. Hence I end up reading more on my PRS-350, PRS T2 and Kindle Keyboard.

Although I also like my Kobo's and newer Kindles, too. Seems like the best one for me is always the one I'm currently using.

I feel the same about whatever reader I'm currently using, but I've done a lot of reading on my T2 (especially now that I know I can adjust the darkness of the fonts). I've got a lighted case that I can use at night, but I particularly like reading on the T2 when it's out of its case. It's so light and comfortable to hold. Sony just made quality eReaders. The batteries never seem to go dead.

Me too. It was the first Sony I bought (refurbished from the old Tiger Direct). I've never seen a T3 "in the flesh" but I think the T2 is fine.
