How do you differentiate between author and editor of a book?

Is there anyway you can differentiate between author(s) and editor(s) of a book in calibre?

As far as I know there aren't any, which leads to the question that I want to ask.

1) What is the standard or best way to differentiate both?
2) What do forum members do when adding anthologies with multiple authors?

a) Add each individual author names
b) Add only editor names
c) Add 'Various' in author field and done with it.

I've added a custom column, same structure as Author, to store editors. If I have multiple authors and editors, I'll add all the authors to the author field and all the editors to the editor field. I've even used the editor field to store the translator's name when that comes up. I'm not picky enough, nor does it come up often enough in my library, for me to make a new translator field.

In the author section, I add the editor name and only those authors that are dear to me within the anthology. So, it would list Gardener Dozois & George R R Martin & Anne McCaffery. There might be other good authors there, but these would be favorite authors. Could you add all of the authors? I think so. Don't know if there is a limit. I use an auxiliary authors field FOR:
The real authors name if the cover shows both (eg X writing as Y)
Y goes in the {Authors} even tho it is a pen name, X goes in the {#AuxA}

If the list of Authors is >2, They go in #AuxA and 1)the Editor goes in Authors as: Jo Smith (ed) 2) <Various> when there is no clear editor

I also TREAT Translators, Illustrators the same way
Jane Smith (trans), Irving Jones (trans)

Paren do not seem to affect the sort


I started doing this because my original reader used file names and I needed to keep it short

I simply tack (editor) at the end of the name as that doesn't effect author sort.

With an anthology I'll either go with the current author list (replacing commas with & if needed), add 'various' to the author field and/or add the authors that I'd look for.
