backup and restore books on device?

My Kobo Aura One had a stroke or something when I left it in the hot car all day. It is working, but gets the cover images wrong and doesn't remember which books are most recent. I would like to try a factory reset.

Can Calibre save the list of books on my device so that I can restore them afterward? Will it include the information about which ones I've read, how much, the dates, etc? How reliable is it? Because if it's going to screw it up I will probably just keep it the way it is.

Thanks

Kobo Utilities plugin might rescue some of the details.

Calibre only detects what is on the device (in visible storage), not reading status

That sounds like a corrupt database on the device. You can try signing out of the Kobo account on the device. This is less severe than a factory reset. It won't remove the sideloaded books from the device, but it will rebuild the database and you will lose the reading status of the books.

My Kobo Utilities plugin can store the reading status for the books on the device. It doesn't do anything for books that haven't been read. Unfortunately, if the database is already corrupted, it might not be possible to fetch the information from it. You would need to connect the device and try it.

The Reading List plugin can fetch the fill list of books that are on the device and in the library. Or just create a list with these books when it is connected. Or, simply connect the device and then select all books that are in the library and on the device, and add a tag to indicate it is on the device. Then you can restore the books later.

Actually - when I turned on the Wifi it said I had a software update. So I let it do that, and it seems to have fixed the problem

That's going to be sort of a coincidence. The firmware update itself won't have fixed it. The reboot that took place during the firmware update would have forced a reread of the database. It might also have done a database compact. That can fix some issues with the database, but, it depends on exactly what was wrong.
