How to "+" (add) different edition?

How to "+" (add) different edition of a book in the same format, say, EPUB, to the same author? When I try to add the same book, but different edition, and I change a title by adding "2E" to it, Calibre will add it, but it will remove the existing item ...
Is the only way of keeping 2 (or more editions) as separate items?

What do you have in Preferences->Add books->Reading metadata and Adding actions - what you describe suggests you don't have the right settings for what you want to do

You will need to get metadata from file name - because every edition of say Gulliver's Travels by Thomas Swift will have those values in the metadata

I would add the first one and edit the title to: Gulliver's Travels (1757), then add the second one and edit its title to: Gulliver's Travels (2017)

Thanks BR,
Perhaps I was a little bit ambiguous about "+" ADD ...
I'm within "edit metadata" and here we have "+" to add different format, pdf, epub, AZW etc. All what is possible there is to add a single book of the same format; I can have one PDF, one epub, one AZW, but I cant add second epub, or second pdf (different edition or version) ...

A book in a calibre library - i.e. a line on the book list -- can only have one file of any format - i.e one EPUB, plus one PDF, plus one AZW3, etc etc. But not two of anything. That's not going to change any time soon - if ever.

I had completely forgotten, or more likely never even noticed that the Metadata edit screen had that Add format button, I add formats with cut and paste into the book list

Yep, you'll have to add the file as a second book. Might be worth creating a custom column with the edition name.
