Lightbulb Nova Plus Thread

Since a search turned up nothing on the Nova Plus, I thought I'd make a thread!

I'm very tempted to buy one, since I have no need for a stylus, and the reviews of the Pro have left quite an impression on me.

I hope that the Plus is really just the Pro without the Wacom stuff!

According to a post on the boox forums from September 17 2019 the current firmware at the time (yesterday, as I'm writing this) is 2.1.1.

Threads on this forum suggest the firmware with this version number on the Nova Pro is buggy, but then, the Boox website doesn't even mention the Plus, so I guess it's possible the numbering between Pro and Plus is "out of sync".

… I guess I'll find out soon!

Since the official Boox website no longer shows the Nova Plus model, I would be worried that there will no longer be support for it.

That would be a big concern for me, especially since they have said that they will eventually upgrade their recent devices to Android 9.0.

Whether or not they do that, remains to be seen. My fingers are crossed.

However, I wonder whether they would do that, or provide any other updates/fixes, for a model which they seem to have discontinued... Certainly, they seem to have forgotten about the original Max. Mine has not received any of the more recent updates.

According to ebook.store they have not (yet?) listed it at all… and I couldn't care less about what version of Android runs on it, I just want a stable reading experience.

If you don't need a more recent version of Android, that's all fine and dandy. However, as I said, my worry would be that it would no longer receive any other updates/fixes as well.

There have been bugs on all the various brands and models of ereaders which I have owned. And looking at other threads, the same seems to be true of every brand of ereader. It's also true of most other such electronic devices.

So, if they are no longer supporting the Nova Plus, you might have to live with whatever limitations and bugs that it currently has. If you're okay with the software on it in its current state, that's fine. Go for it.

My original Max has not received any updates/fixes for over 2 years now. I would have liked to have seen a few more updates on it so that it had much of the same functionality as my Note Pro and Nova Pro. However, I doubt that will now happen. It still functions and I still like it, but it is more limited than my other Onyx devices.

So I've had a few days with the Nova Plus, and I have to say the hardware is really nice!
Battery time is excellent, I've read several hundred pages of manga over several hours and the battery dropped by maybe 20%, with frontlight at ⅓ and wifi set to automatically turn off after 5 minutes (very useful feature).

Buuuut… I've also had two crashes (once when rotating a document, once when reflowing), and the UI is pretty bad. I expected a few poorly translated words, but there's at least one app (the wifi transfer web interface) that isn't translated at all?

And the custom crop options… yikes!

You have to tap "Navigation Mode" -> "More settings" to get there.
Then you get a super fiddly crop UI that takes 2-3 tries to get anything done. And half the time it doesn't do what you want it to. There is no way to undo anything as far as I can tell.
Once you get it set up how you like it and go back to the document, it shows navigation buttons on the lower left of the screen. You can deactivate them. But they come back every time you change the crop settings. Wait, I mean redo the crop settings. You can't change them, because as soon as you get to the "More settings" screen, it resets back to default.

*sighs* This is pretty bad!

I might have to return it

I did in fact return it. ereader.store was very quick with the refund!

One more complaint I just remembered: The one hardware button is a Back button, not a Home button, which I would have found way more useful!
