How do I update the firmware

I think I should probably update the firmware on my kobo Firma. But I am not sure that I want to install the Kobo desktop. How can I update firmware without downloading the desktop?

You can download the latest firmware update for your device from my kobofirmware page, then extract the zip file into the .kobo folder in the KOBOeReader partition (you should end up with three more files, KoboRoot.tgz, manifest.md5sums, and an upgrade folder in the .kobo folder) and eject.

Simpler still, do a sync on the device. It will connect to WiFi and download the latest available firmware for your device.

If what you are thinking is "4.19.x was release, I want to update" and you don't get an update over WiFi, that is expected. Kobo release the firmware in stages. They release to a small group for a few days, then expand who gets it over the next few weeks. If you haven't done sync or update for more than a couple of months, you will probably get a 4.18.x firmware today. In a few days time, you will probably get 4.19.x.

if I have my affiliate set to nonsense will it still update the device or do I need to restore it to Kobo? thanks.

No. Even if you have it set to "kobo" it won't upgrade yet. You'll need to set the affiliate to either beta, walmartca or bestbuyca to upgrade. Then, after the upgrade, just set it back to "nonsense" to keep control. I think this is the easiest and safest way to get the right firmware for your Kobo device.

This firmware release website will tell you what release of firmware six affiliates are currently using. Just go to the "Other Affiliates" tab for your device to find out which one is currently downloading the newest firmware.

one more please. beta will work and I have already downloaded the update from the main page. do I need to download from the affiliate page instead? they should be the same, right?

No. If you've downloaded the Clara firmware yourself, just copy it to your Clara's main directory, disconnect your Clara and restart it. It should upgrade on its own from there. In that case you don't have to change the affiliate name at all. The only advantage of changing the affiliate name is that your device will automatically download the right firmware. Which is important for those who don't know if they've got Aura Edition 2 (version 1 or 2) for example. For the Clara it doesn't really matter. There is only one version.

EDIT: And yes, the version is the same no matter where you got it. Forgot to answer your first question.

EDIT 2: Now that I think about it, you may not even have to restart a Kobo, it might do that automatically. I may be confusing it with a Tolino here.
