Launch on PC then problem wants scan/fix
With Windows 10 Home, Kobo 4.14.1277, my KA1 launches on the PC and then a Windows alert appears in the lower right corner and says there is a problem with the KA1 database and tells me to "scan and fix" it. The alert disappears quickly so I've never done anything.
Meanwhile, so far as I know, the KA1 works fine on the PC with Calibre. It does have problems with ADE (ADE tends to start not responding). Apart from the PC, the KA1 works fine. What is causing the "scan and fix" alert? Should something be done? Thanks. |

My best guess would be Windows's moronic response to a FAT filesystem with the dirty bit set, which for mysterious and probably fairly stupid reasons can happen on the Kobo userstore even when you haven't done anything wrong.
I won't vouch for Windows's fsck not doing anything even stupider with that, so I'd go with "ignore". The Kobo itself will do a round of checks at boot time, so you can see if a cold reboot "fixes" it. I'd still check that it's not an actual issue by verifying the integrity of the USB cable/plug being used, and trying on another machine. Last edited by NiLuJe; 05-27-2019 at 05:30 PM. |

I've often wondered what this is, too. It happens fairly often (but not always) with my ClaraHD and Forma, but not the KA1 or any earlier models. Whenever I follow through with the scan&fix it always tells me no problems were found.

I definitely started to notice it with the Forma, and I just chalked it up to Nickel being a tad heavy-handed about handling /mnt/onboard during USBMS sessions, and/or the fsck version they ship being stupid about clearing the dirty bit.
I never actually ever encountered a real FS corruption, and a proper, recent fsck run basically only ever clears the dirty bit, so I've just stopped wondering about it ;p. EDIT: A quick glance at my dmesg shows that, yep, also seeing it on the H2O. Except in that case I *may* have had something to do with it, because I *did* actually unmount onboard like a savage a couple times ;p. Code:
[73769.000316] FAT-fs (sde): Volume was not properly unmounted. Some data may be corrupt. Please run fsck. Code:
fsck.vfat /dev/sde fsck.fat 4.1 (2017-01-24) 0x41: Dirty bit is set. Fs was not properly unmounted and some data may be corrupt. 1) Remove dirty bit 2) No action ? 1 Perform changes ? (y/n) y /dev/sde: 15178 files, 485455/829227 clusters Last edited by NiLuJe; 05-27-2019 at 06:31 PM. |

I don't know whether this is correct, but I've always assumed that if the Kobo really had a problem calibre would soon be telling me the Kobo database was corrupt when I connect. As this hasn't happened with either the Clara or the Forma I think I'm safe

Has anyone tried to use the Repair option in the Device section of the ereader Settings?

@Semwize: Quite possibly unrelated, or pure coincidence. The Forma has an eMMc chip.

Most of the time I just ignore the warning and click on the x. Every once in a while, I click on the scan and fix popup. So far I haven't had it find an error so I'm not that concerned.
