Calibre running slowly on Win10

Hi.

I recently bought a new laptop and went from Windows 7 to 10. Everything in the computer is exactly the same as the one that ran Windows 7, but Calibre runs much slower on the new laptop.

The computer has less ram and runs windows 7 and run Calibre much quicker. It takes the computer less than 7 hours to add 17.000 books, it takes the laptop more than 24 hours to add the same books.

I have no idea what's wrong but it's very frustrating.

It takes the laptop a half hour to add 1% and the computer adds the same 1% in a couple of minutes.

Thanks. It looks to run much better now. I thought that I had done that earlier. Is it automatically disabled in windows 7?

On your new PC, check Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Virtual Memory > Paging File and make sure it is turned on and is set to be allowed to be very large since Calibre loads all of a Library's metadata into memory.

Also, Library > Library Maintenance > Check Library to defragment/compress your metadata.db file.

Are you sure that the hard drives in the two systems are similar specs? I wouldn't be surprised if the laptop has a slower drive in it.

The two laptops are exactly the same specs, the only differences is that one runs win7 the other win10

Loading books defragments your hard-drive. Defragment it using either the Win 10 built-in optimizer or a 3d party defragmenter like Piriform's Defraggler. Run Win 10 Disk-Cleanup in system file mode too.

W10 runs defrag automatically (I think weekly). Nothing stops you from a a Manual launch after you do significant file deletes, but you can't turn it OFF (you might remove the program, but that would be drastic).
The Defrag tool has an Analize function: I have never seen double digits like I used to with XP (only manual/scheduled), convincing me that it automatically does run.

Fragmentation is only a practical issue when your drive becomes very full (say >90%). A drive with lots of free space really shouldn’t get fragmented.
