How do you add metadata from a local source?
What file types are accepted. What format? How do you direct calibre to them?
How does "read metadata from file contents rather than file name" work? Is there a tutorial on that? I want to add metadata to zip files or cbz files but have no idea how to get calibre to recognize it. |

The metadata is embedded in the file, but is only available for certain formats. I do not believe that zip or cbz files support embedded metadata.

Select the book in Calibre, right clock, select "Edit metadata" and copy and paste metadata from external source.
You can drag and drop cover image directly from browser to Calibre when the book is selected. Works even on Linux. You can also press Ctrl+d when on book to download metadata from Internet. As long as the name of the book and the author is right Calibre is usually able to find metadata somewnere. By Metadata I mean proper title, author, publisehr, cover, blurb ... Quote:

Some file formats carry their metadata, but Calibre maintains its own "private" copy of metadata. They might be, initially, read from the inside of the main book file (such as epub), but you can edit that metadata, add your own tags, notes, download better cover ... When you export some of file formats (by using "save to disk" from Calibre), Calibre updates metadata inside main file format (epub, mobi, azw...) with its "private" copy of metadata. When you browse the Calibre Library directory using file manager, you will see that in each directory with the book there is also cover.jpg and metadata.opf file. This is a backup "private" copy of metadata Calibre has made. The main copy of this metadata resides in the metadata.db file in the root of the Calibre Library directory. |

So if I have a program that offers to save metadata info in either .txt, .json, .xml, or .csv format, there is no way to get calibre to recognise any of it?

There is a way, so the answer to your question is "no". "Import CSV File to Update Metadata" is one of the 61 tools of the Job Spy plugin.
