Kindle DX (B004) Conundrum
Hello,
I'm in a bit of a bind. I have lurked here for many, many years since I picked up my Kindle DX (B004). I have to believe at some point I dabbled in some random software package that I downloaded here with my Kindle DX, and then promptly had some sort of hard drive crash where I can't see my old downloads - and I don't quite remember what the package was. Then, today, I started realizing I should upgrade my firmware (2.1), and went to Amazon's site to manually upgrade it to at least 2.3, and after getting me up to 2.1.1, it gave me an error (U006 - Checksum). When I use the ;debugOn and ;dm commands, this is what it says: Code:
190421:230032 system: I otaup:def:processing update /mnt/base-us/system/update.10728/04/update-04-351050064-399380047.bin 190421:230032 system: I otaup:def:version is "FC02" 190421:230046 system: I otaup:def:update image checksum OK 190421:230046 system: C otaup:def:drawing: eips 54 58 "stage 1 of 2" 190421:230108 ota_install: I def:patch:patchinfo="/bin/busybox":patching file [...] 190421:230118 ota_install: I def:patch:patchinfo="/opt/amazon/ebook/config/netfront.ini":patching file 190421:230118 ota_install: C def:patch:patchinfo="/opt/amazon/ebook/config/netfront.ini":checksum failure 190421:230119 system: E otaup:def:image update failed 190421:230120 system: I mntroot:def:Making root filesystem read-only 190421:230120 webupdate: I def:webupdate::attempting to remove update file : update-04-351050064-399380047.bin 190421:230120 webupdate: C def:webupdate::failed to apply update : update-04-351050064-399380047.bin 190421:230121 shutdown[11754]: shutting down for system reboot I tried to find uninstall.bin's for each of those and can't seem to match it up - it keeps getting shut down on netfront.ini. Is there any hope of me getting off 2.1.1? Is there a baseline firmware I can install from? I'd love to get to 2.5.8, at least, or launch into 3.2.1 as in reading all these 2019 threads that seems possible (!) - although I don't have access to a Kindle 3, unfortunately. Any help would be appreciated. Happy to post more logs if that helps. Cheers! |

Code:
190421:230118 ota_install: I def:patch:patchinfo="/opt/amazon/ebook/config/netfront.ini":patching file 190421:230118 ota_install: C def:patch:patchinfo="/opt/amazon/ebook/config/netfront.ini":checksum failure From your post, it reads as if you where not following the directions: https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custo...deId=201504450 That is, there was no reason to go from version 2.1 to 2.1.1 (PS: Tell us where you got the install package for B004/2.1.1 - post a link if it was not Amazon, with that information it may be possible to spot the exact problem). Thanks knc1!
I just downloaded 2.3. Watching the screen, there appeared to be a first (successful) upgrade from 2.1 to 2.1.1 but then it got stuck from 2.1.1 to 2.3. I did not download anything like a 2.1.1 upgrade from Amazon or any other site. Cheers! |

In your case, you might want to try Duokan OS. This is available also for Kindle DX. Just google it.

If possible I would prefer to stick with official Amazon 2.5.8 and then try (and revert from) the Yifanlu 3.2.1 builds.
Is it possible to access the rootfs to view or edit the netfront.ini file? Are there any plain vanilla reference sets of files that I could compare that file with? Are there tools where I could repackage the bin to delete that particular patch? Or, maybe easiest, does someone privately maintain recovery images for 2.5.8 for the DX? Cheers! |

You can access it over SSH via USBNet, which *should* only require a working JB to install
![]() I don't recall if anyone maintained any such recovery image/dumps, but I'd imagine the hack that modified the file either made a backup somewhere, shipped with an uninstaller, or shipped with a vanilla copy. You won't be able to (easily) repackage a legacy update file, because they're just a bunch of delta patches stacked on top of the other, and messing with that process manually is... ill-advised ![]() But it is technically feasible, via KindleTool. I do have a K2i on FW 2.5.8, but I don't know if it was using the exact same config files as a DX, so that may not be of much help, unless you can get me the expected checksum, which should be jotted down somewhere in the mess that are those legacy update scripts (again, KindleTool) ![]() |

Great, you could be right and if I can SSH into the machine there might be an original file right there. Dumb question, what does "JB" stand for?

And... success!
I loaded up the SSH via UsbNetworking on my Windows client and the very-professional-but-unknown package I loaded in 2011 had kindly made a backup copy as "netfront.orig" in the /opt/amazon/ebook directory. After I wrote over the netfront.ini file I upgraded to 2.3 A-ok! Thanks everyone! |
