Lending Library Asks to Enroll KindleUnlimited

I want to borrow a book on my Oasis. I go the the Lending Library, choose a book, and select Borrow for Free. This takes me a a screen asking me to sign up for a KindleUnlimited trial. The only option is to sign up or go back to the original page.

Is it not possible to borrow from the Kindle Lending Library without purchasing Unlimited? Seems to defeat the purpose.

Do you already have something you’ve borrowed for KOLL? If so, you need to return it and wait until the next month to borrow another book (go to your Account Content & Devices list to check Borrows; you can return it from there). If I remember correctly, KOLL is one book per month. And it can only be read on Amazon device. Selection is mostly the same as KU.

Prime members have Prime Reading benefit, with ‘unlimited’ borrowing (one at a time I think?), on any device, but selection is not very extensive.

If you are clicking the right place (and I don't remember the difference- or it there IS a difference) .... using the Kindle Owners Lending Library KOLL instead of KindleUnlimited KU -- then you should be told that: "you already have book XYZ borrowed; want to return it?". Unless it's still the same month, then you can't borrow another and get asked about joining KU.
