What material will not trigger the touch panel?

When I read a paper book I usually use a pencil or my fingers to guide my eyes along the paper. However, I'm using an 8th gen Kindle basic and every kind of material i have experimented with(metal, rubber, wood, paper ) will trigger the touch panel and change the screen. Wondering if anyone here has a solution/DIY hack to overcome this 'problem'.

8th gen kindle basic uses IR (infrared) grid over the screen to detect where you are touching, not capacitative touch as with the front-lit Kindles. Anything that is not transparent to IR will be detected as a touch - which is to say just about any material.

There are tradeoffs: IR does not require an additional layer over the screen, so there’s less diffusion, and it is not sensitive to variance in fingertip capacitance due to coldness or dryness, and anything works as a stylus if you don’t want to get skin oil on the screen. But it seems most people prefer front light.

I misread this the first time.

A pencil or paper or metal ruler or anything longer than the width of the display and stiff enough not to droop should work.

But why not just set the line spacing to be larger?
