Converting Nook manga
Anyone else having issues removing DRM from Nook Color/Tablet epub files? I've had no trouble with regular B&N books, but the manga/comic files don't convert correctly. I end up with a title page only. Have tried converting into other formats as well (azw3, mobi), but it still ends up the same - DRM removed, but only the title page as content.
I'm assuming it has something to do with the internal file structure and how Calibre is detecting that, but I don't know enough about it to really start digging into it. Has been the same issue for several app versions. |

calibre does not DeDRM anything, although the plugin from Apprentice Alf does.
Quick test -- after importing, you have an EPUB in calibre. Don't convert -- just open in the calibre viewer. Is all the content there? If so, you have a conversion problem, nothing to do with DRM. If not, the DeDRM plugin has screwed up -- for that you will need to ask on Alf's blog. |

To clarify:
- I do have the DeDRM plugin installed. - If I import with that disabled, I can't open the epub to view content. - When I enable the plugin and import, it removes the DRM so I can open the epub, but all I can see is the cover/title page. - Looking at the file size, the DeDRM'd version is virtually the same size as the original, so it would seem all the content is in the file - just not displaying in Calibre. I guess that means the DeDRM sort of worked, but not completely? - If I try to convert that DeDRM'd file, it turns into a tiny file - obviously including just the cover/title. I'll try asking on Alf's blog. |

Good idea.
![]() Another thing you can do is to take a look at the imported book using the Edit Book feature, instead of the Ebook-viewer -- that will let you see the HTML+CSS+embed images and stuff... assuming you feel comfortable delving into that, that is. ![]() If converting the file shrinks it that drastically, it is possible the images are not being used in the DeDRMed copy, and the conversion removes the unused files (if so the conversion log would make a note of that fact). Thanks for the info! Will definitely look into that, didn't realize you could dig into to the content that way.

I had a pub analyzed by a commercial DeDRM company and they told me that the file (pre DeDRM) was improperly formatted.
For what this worth... |

After some digging around and following the advice of eschwartz to use the Edit book feature, I found that nook manga isn't packaged the same way as regular ebooks so they can't be viewed natively in any other application besides the nook app. If you want to convert it to another format, you can always manually save out all of the images and repackage them yourself. However if you just want to read your manga with the nook app on your device, but the book is only showing 2 pages, open the pub.opf file under Misc with Edit Book, find line 12:
<meta xmlns="" name="BNContentKind" content=""/> And change it to: <meta xmlns="" name="BNContentKind" content="ComicsDRP"/> Save the changes and re-sideload the book from your Calibre library to your device. The nook app should now show all the pages in the manga. Last edited by syncron; 04-17-2019 at 12:23 PM. |
