Fictionwise and Micropay

This directly from Fictionwise about their Micropay Rebates....

Quote:
Fictionwise allows more kinds of offer to combine than any other
retail ebook site I know of. We allow Buywise discounts to combine
with *all* other offers. We allow any coupon to combine with any
rebate or promotional discount, and any promotional discount to
combine with any coupon, etc. We even do allow micropay rebates that
are less than about 30% to combine with each other. But, we cannot
afford to allow deep micropay rebates to combine, and so we need to
put the restriction that in those cases micropay cannot be used to
generate more micropay.
So now we know that you have to pay by credit card it the micropay rebate is 30% or more. And you can put it on micropay if it's less then 30% of a micropay rebate.

It isn't always 30%. I have taken advantage of several 50% and 60% micropay rebates that weren't CC only (we even had a 100% one a while ago).

I think that is just a general guideline that they follow. Any rebate that is CC only clearly says so.

If the micropay rebate is less then 30% you can use micropay. it's the rare book that allows a more then 30% mocropay rebate.

And those really get my attention too. Anything that gives me most or all of my money back (true, in a form that can only be used there but....) gets a large allotment of my attention. Especially if I was thinking about buying it eventually anyway. Believed I pre-ordered Anathem with a massive micropay rebate.

I've taken chances on 100% rebate books if I was going to buy other books anyway. I just buy the rebated title then immediately spend the rebate on the books I was going to buy anyway. Essentially it gives me the rebated title for free.

Exactly. In the scenario you write about, I too have gotten a few books absolutely free.

Of course, this does change the math. A 50% micro pay rebate doesn't mean you can get $200 worth of books for $100... It means you get 1.5x your money in books... since you don't get the 50% on the books you get with micro pay.

So, if you buy $100 with cc, you have $50 micro pay... and you can by $50 worth with that for which you will get 0 micropay. So, you've gotten $150 of ebooks for $100.

I just went through all my emails from Fictionwise, and added up the total amount I'd spent (card or Paypal) and then added the total cover price of all the books on my bookshelf. It worked out well for me.

Any reduction in cost is good, provided the price has not been hiked up before the reduction.

My pay is $100

I get a pay rise of £50

My new pay is £150

Have I had a 50% pay rise or a 30% pay rise?

Answer: both are true.

I don't wish to go off-topic but I can't let an incorrect statement like that go unchallenged. You described it as a pay rise and so it is relative to your existing pay i.e. a pay rise of 50%.

If you had a 33% pay cut from £150 to £100 then you need a 50% pay rise to restore your pay to its former level.

Let's say you have this $50 in your micropay account. If you were to purchase $50 worth of eBooks with a 10% micropay rebate on each book, you'd still have $5 left in your account.

When explanations get really crazy and when 73 or more posts (from 2 or 3 threads) talk about discounts, memberships, credit card credit, etc. all fail to really explain the inner workings of something very basic.....well, then, I always go to to Dr. Bad Advice for a clear explanation of EXACTLY how all this works.

You'll find his explanations succinct and to the point -- no bravado, no ego, no bombast....just a clear explanation and nothing more.

He's in MobileRead's LOUNGE right now, comfortably seated on his buttocks. Pay him a visit. Or, if you prefer, get out your calculator and again go over the figures...

True... but the bottom line is that a 50% micropay rebate is not the same as paying 50% for the books. Alot of people think it will be though.

You would.

I'd have zero left in my account and one extra book

Dunno about Fictionwise, but at BoB I had a credit of almost $5. I bout a more expensive eBook and was able to use my credit towards it. Then I got a 2% discount on what I had left to pay for using Google checkout. All in all, that worked well. I hope FW would allow a partial credit to be used.
