Whispersync on kindle app

Ended up taking a kindle oasis 2 back as the back light went crazy on it, was planning on getting a new kindle in black Friday sales however I've the past week I have Been reading on the ipad and I kind of like it.
Only thing I am trying to get my head around is how the whispersync works, to avoid carrying my ipad everywhere I was going to use the kindle app on my p20 Pro, however I can't seem to get whispersync to work unless I do a manual sync each time. How often should it sync, is it every page turn? And should it sync when I go into the app?

Sometimes mine will work when I don't do a manual sync but it's not reliable. I just do the sync each time I quit when I want to sync.

Alternately I'll often just remember a key phrase on the top of the page when I stop reading. Something short. On my current book I might use "mother was pale". Then when I begin on a different device I'll use text search to find that. Sometimes that phrase will occur a few times but search gives me enough context that I know which one it is. All in all I find this faster than using whispersync but it's more trouble so I don't always do it.
