PW4 problem waking up

I have now 3 or 4 times had my Paperwhite wake to a garbled screen: it is as if the screen was horizontally sliced and the slices were interlaced (like cutting a deck of cards in two and shuffling the two stacks together). So I see a sort of ‘double exposure’.

The touch screen still responds, so if I tap I’m able to eventually navigate to Settings and then to Restart. (The other way is holding power button until Power dialog comes up with CANCEL RESTART SCREEN OFF options and tap in the right place.) After Restart, it is all fine again for days or weeks.

There doesn’t seem to be a way to trigger this, I’d say it happens only 1 of 300 wakes or thereabouts, and it spans at least a couple of firmware updates (5.3.10 now).

I don’t remember seeing this on my Voyage or PW3 or Basic (same firmware version); just curious if anyone else has seen this.

Never had that happen. I would be concerned there's something wrong with the PW4 hardware.

Factory reset the device. If the problem comes up again, leave it the way it is, take pictures and contact Amazon for warranty replacement.

I am not that concerned about it. If it is a hardware issue, it is a very subtle one.

I've had this happen twice, and both times my Kindle went to sleep on the Home page so I try to make sure I'm in a book when I put the Kindle down..

I have two PW4 and neither has done this. I'd call Amazon and they'll send you a new one and then you return the one you have in that box. When I've done it, they paid shipping both ways.

Ha. My incident today was ‘in a book’ when it went to sleep. I don’t think it matters what state the Kindle is in.

I repeat: I want nothing to do with exchanging my Kindle. I am happy with the one I have. As I said I doubt it is hardware, or it would happen much more frequently.

My working hypothesis is that it might have something to do with the magnetic sensor getting triggered in unexpected ways. I don’t use a cover, and my Scott-E-vest has several magnets near the inside pocket I put the kindle in (to help stuff from falling out of outside pockets). And today I think I put it down on top of an eyeglass case with magnet. I wish there were a setting to disable the sensor (even with a cover, the device can jiggle around in transport and cause waking, power drain — I’d like iPads to have one for that reason as well). But even if theory is correct, the wake-up issue does not happen often enough to be a bother.
