Book not showing up?

I uploaded several books to my Kindle from Calibre yesterday, but one of them doesn't show up in the list. If I search for the title, it isn't found. If I search for the author's name, all his other books are there except this one. Calibre thinks the book is on the device, and the AZW3 file and a corresponding SDR directory are in the documents directory on the device.

I've tried deleting the book using Calibre and then reloading it; deleting manually and reloading; deleting, rebooting and reloading; but nothing I do makes the book show up.

Anyone any idea what might be causing this, and what I can do about it?

Is it in a collection? If so remove it from the collection, connect to USB and then manually delete the files including the Calibre management files on the ereader, disconnect and reconnect before running Calibre.
I had a similar issue on a new PW3.

I had a similar issue on a new PW3.

No, not in a collection. It's a new book I've just uploaded -- since I can't see it on the Kindle I haven't had any opportunity to add it to a collection.

It's an EPUB which has been converted to AZW3 by Calibre. The Calibre viewer shows the AZW3 without any trouble. All the other books I uploaded at the same time were also EPUBs converted by Calibre.

OK, I tried that. Neither the author or title contain any funny characters. I imported another copy of the EPUB, removed the last letter of the author and the last letter of the title, and sent it off to the Kindle. It got autoconverted to AZW3, and appeared in the documents directory of the Kindle as expected. It did not show up in the Kindle's book list.

I also tried editing the AZW3 to see if there was anything odd about that. There were a bunch of warnings about invalid IDs starting with digits, so I let Calibre fix those, and tried uploading again. Still no joy.

Then I tried manually copying the AZW3 to the documents directory on the Kindle. All my other books are in per-author subdirectories; I put this one directly inside the documents folder. Lo and behold, it suddenly appeared (but with the name in its raw format, without the series name and number which my Calibre metadata plugboard attaches). And I can open it and read it without any problems.

Before you ask: the book in question is the third in a series, and the other two show up fine, and I've been using the same metadata plugboard ever since I had my first Kindle some years ago.

Now I'm really baffled! I tried copying the AZW3 to the author subdirectory inside the documents directory; then I decided I would also copy it from Calibre, then take a copy of the file Calibre uploaded and see if I could figure out what the difference was between the raw AZW3 and the version after the metadata plugboard had had its wicked way with it.

Guess what: both books showed up. I suppose I should be pleased.
