Hello,
My Glo HD battery life began to decrease drastically after 2 years of intensive use. So I bought a H2O2 months ago but I don't like the display as much as the Glo HD's which was crispier and more contrasted in my opinion. I have some bugs on this one despite doing a factory reset and the firmware updates. I love the fact that I can read in my bath though ![]() I recently saw that the Glo HD battery was replaceable (I thought it was soldered), so I ordered a new one and brought the old one to the waste. I installed the new one, tried to charge it for hours but nothing happened: the screen stays on a user guide picture (it appeared when I removed the dead battery). The light beyond the on/off button gets red, it seems the reader can be turned on and off by long presses of the button. I've tried to follow the factory resets with finger tapping (but I don't know if I'm doing it right), the paperclip in the hole (does nothing as well). If I remove the sd card, my computer (which runs Ubuntu) sees 3 partitions. If the new battery is dead, shouldn't the reader still be able to turn on when charging? I have read here that some people flash their SD cards. Would it work in this case? How do you do that? ![]() Thank you for your help! |

if the power light comes on, you should have power
if the screen does not change - it could be a bad sd card it could be the screen cable became loose it could be ... the fragile eink screen is broke while you switch the battery :-( -- those batteries are replaceable, but usually also glued in, can be hard to remove, and has to be done ever so carefully with a great deal of patience, as the glass display underneath can't take any stress -- the thing is, if the device boots at all, screen clearing is one of the first thing that happens if the device had wifi enabled, and you didn't factory reset, you could check if it's visible to your wifi router. if it's there but the screen doesn't update it's a screen issue unfortunately. same if you see a PC connection when hitting the "Connect" button blindly after connecting PC-USB cable. More difficult to get it to connect after factory reset... (language select and then maybe you're stuck in the wifi selection dialog you can't see) Last edited by frostschutz; 11-25-2018 at 06:21 PM. |

Thank you very much for your reply!
![]() The screen doesn't change but the image is perfect. I've tried to remove the battery (that was glued) as gentle as possible but maybe I applied too much pressure. I always cut the wifi when I don't use it... ![]() I can't seem to connect it to the PC by randomly hitting the screen. |

Well, no harm in trying I guess, you can ask for an SD card image in this thread:

It doesn't seem to work. I don't know if I missed something: my computer recreated the partitions and their content on the sd card, I put it back in, nothing changes when I turn it on. Should I do something else?

I don't have a Glo HD, on my H2O a regular boot sequence will see the power LED blinking on and off for a few moments until it stops. Is this similar on a Glo? If so, then it should mean the device is booting regulalry, but the display does not work anymore for some reason.
![]() With a broken SD card or if the boot fails, it should either not start blinking in the first place - or never stop. |

The led doesn't blink, but I don't remember if it did.
How can I know if the sd card is defective? I don't have another one and the img restoration seemed to go fine, my computer didn't say anything. Can theoretically a Kobo work if connected to a wall charger with the battery removed? |

If you created the SD card like this: (/dev/sdx being the cardreader device)
Code:
dd bs=1M if=sdcard.image of=/dev/sdx sync Code:
# unplug and re-plug sd card reader or clear caches echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches # compare cmp sdcard.image /dev/sdx && echo OK # should say EOF on /dev/sdx or OK Note I don't know what type of file davidfor gave you. Like if it's an image.gz then you have to gunzip first. |

I used the "disks" tool. I had an "img" file.
I tried on windows as well, didn't work better... ![]() I'm giving up but thank you very much for your time, it's very nice of you. |

I have a similar problem. I've been trying to find a solution but haven't succeeded.
My Kobo Glo HD stopped worked all of a sudden. When I try to turn it on, the red LED stays on but nothing changes on the screen. At first I thought it could be something related to the battery, so I bought a new one. After I installed the new battery, I got the same result: LED stays on, nothing changes on the screen. Then I guessed the micro SD card could be damaged or faulty. I tried writing a new disk image to a micro SD card I had lying around my house. It didn't work either. I thought that maybe that micro SD card could be damaged since it had been a long time since I hadn't used it, or that maybe it could be just too old for the Kobo to recognize it. So I bought a new micro SD card and wrote the disk image. Again, it didn't work. I'm pretty sure the screen is not broken because I've been capable of using the Kobo at least twice since it stopped working correctly. Both times it did turn on, it had been left unused for about two or three months; it worked normally for about one week and then it stopped working again. This is why I insisted on trying to repair it. Of course I've tried doing the manual factory reset, without any results. Whenever I connect the Kobo via USB to a Windows computer, it shows that a device called "SE Blank Megrez" has been connected. Does anybody have any other ideas/suggestions? Thanks in advance. |
