Kindle Cloud Reader
For years I've used the Cloud Reader in my work. I'm a writer and journalist who does tons of research, and with the Cloud Reader I could pop up a Kindle title in a window on my screen while composing text in another. Much more cumbersome to have to go to the device each time I needed to consult something.
But now the search function seems broken in Cloud Reader, which blows up my methods. A bit of Internet searching reveals others seeing the same thing. Does anyone know what's up? I had hoped Kobo would offer something of this sort, but I gather their cloud reader is no more. Would like to hear from anyone whose experiences differ, in case this is something going wrong at my end. Are there any third party options for doing this? |

Download the Amazon ebooks and use Calibre viewer after import to Calibre. DeDrm plugin required (See Apprentice Alf).
It's ultimately going to be a failure relying on a remote application on someone else's server via the Internet. Cloud is Marketing speak/hype for someone else's server. See early 1900s "The Machine Stops" (available PD), or "No Silver Lining" which is explicitly about cloud failure. |

Search works perfectly fine in Safari and Firefox on iOS. Also Safari and Firefox on macOS. My Windows computer takes 10 minutes to boot up so I’m not trying that. Those are the only two browsers I use.
And yes, the only solution otherwise is to set up your own servers and dedicated communications links and never use the internet because it might not work some day. Last edited by tomsem; 08-22-2021 at 11:02 AM. |

Works for me in Chrome, Windows 10.

I agree with you on using cloud. While it's not wise to rely solely on a cloud server, it cannot be beaten for speed and convenience. (This comes off as somewhat ironic, given that I've railed often against the Kindle Cloud here. Still, while I don't use the Kindle Cloud, the cloud in general certainly has its uses. My favorite is Dropbox). |

Yes, my Windows box is probably 12 years old, cost $2400 back then (I won it in a drawing, it was DOA on arrival but covered under HP warranty and they fixed it). I think it is less than 10 minutes now, I finally had a chance to uninstall a bunch of stuff and free up more hard drive space (had huge photo library etc on there). And some of the slowness is that it starts to download updates as soon as it boots up because I don’t turn it on very often. Still it, can edit HD video once it gets going (not that I need it to do that any more).
I was going to migrate it to a VM on my Mac but Parallels failed to do it. It also failed to do another PC I had. And then they want $30 a year or something like that or it will stop working. So I am giving up on Parallels. I used Fusion previously and that Just Worked. But that’s $200 and then you pay for updates. The windows Professional license should transfer over to a VM, and I have windows running in VirtualBox but am not ready to switch over or pay MS $130 so I can run both. Win 7, Win8 and Win 10 are slower. Win 10 and Vista slower than Win7. Any windows taking 10 minutes is misconfigured. *I used MS tool to convert the laptop install to a file for a VM and that opens in about 15 sec from an external USB2.0 HDD on Openbox running on Linux Mint https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sys...loads/disk2vhd Screenshot is out of date. It has 3 check boxes. Disable Volume Shadow copy and any unneeded services on the donor XP or other compatible Windows. As long as Classic Boot and not UEFI boot is booting your Windows, even on a UEFI machine, the migration will work. Last edited by Quoth; 08-22-2021 at 01:06 PM. |
