Marking books as read

To manage my library well I'd like to be able to mark books as read, and also see the date they were added to the library.
Does anyone know if this is possible?

Calibre comes with the DATE field already set up to record the day it was added to your library. Perhaps you changed the setting? As to marking books as read, a simple Yes/No column addition should do it.

I suggest you DON't re-purpose the Date column. That reflects the date the original entry was made.

I prefer a Date TYPE custom column for my READ status (blank is not read, 2000 is my abandoned flag . 2014 dates are mostly for Empty books that document my paper library (It took a few weeks to scan their barcodes or type names when they were pre-ISBN )

Custom columns are easy to add. Right click on any column title: Add you own...

I have no need to know when a book was added, so on adding a book I set the Date column to Undefined (F2, '-'), and to Now (F2, '=') when I've read it.

Excellent...so simple when you know how! The date column was hidden and I never thought to look for it.
