I bought a Kobo Forma, a little hesitantly.

I was in the market for a new ereader and I read a lot so can justify the expense of a premium ereader. Anyway when I heard Kobo were bringing out a new device I was really looking forward to it.

Then it released and all the mixed reviews came in and it nearly turned me towards an Oasis 2. The only reason I didn't get a Kindle was lack of comfort light and having to muck around in Calibre more to sideload.

Anyway I was worried about the light band, the uneven lighting patches/blotches, the freezes, and the flickering screen issues I had read a lot about.

I am glad to say my lighting is very even except for the light band which doesn't worry me that much. I've had the device for 3 days and read about 6 hours on it and have not even had one freeze or crash (I did lock it in portrait mode for rotation). I also cannot detect any screen flickering using the cell phones on slow mode, waving a pencil or naked eye.

I love how it feels to hold when reading as well. I do have a cover coming so hope that doesn't change that too much.

So I am very happy with the purchase overall. The only niggle I have is the light band, but I don't really notice it when i'm reading so it's ok.

So thanks to the people who posted that their devices were fine. It helped me risk the lottery and I ended up with a really good ereader that I'm happy with.

i'm pleased you are happy with your Kobo Forma. no one should have to feel like they are entering into a lottery when they buy an ereader.

Maybe not, but I feel that with every item I have ever bought. Ever. From a piece of fruit to expensive tech. Will it be worth my money. Is it what I expect it to be. It's not a very healthy mindset, and it is more my issue than any company's issue.

And the world would have to be a very different place for a company to be able to stay in the market without some customers getting a less than perfect product. No one is happy to be the one who gets that item, but really, with everything you buy, it is some level of luck to how "perfect" is will be. That is a part of life, and has little to do with any one company, Kobo included.

maybe in your world but definitely not in mine. i don't keep anything that i'm not 100% satisfied/happy with. it either get's took back or sent back it really is that simple.

you do it your way and i'll do it mine

edit. if people are willing to settle for less then that's exactly what they will get.

edit again. and i certainly wouldn't keep an ereader that had a crappy looking stripe/band on one side of the screen imho of course. (usual disclaimer applies)

I was going to buy one but it seemed more economical to buy H2O I get my large screen with the lower cost. Now that I exorcised the demons out of it and the little ghost orbs are no longer showing on my screen I am actually loving it.

Yay, glad you got it purged! The H2O2 is great, I think. It's just as welll I stayed wthin my ubdget and bought one instead of spending all the extra on a Forma, because now I have to buy my wife an H2O2 too

I really love my Forma. As I've said here before, the complaints about the Forma are all fair, though in my personal opinion the negative effect of some of them is heavily exaggerated. Unfortunately, as it sometimes happens with online reviews on message boards, a very small but vocal percent of the people complaining (read: not the majority!) are unreasonably petty and/or suffer from a bad case of OCD. For example, the seemingly unhinged person from this reddit thread who I had the misfortune of dealing with today. An uninformed user looking to buy an eReader could get a rather warped perception of this device.

I personally think the Forma is a splendid device, yet I have most of the common issues minus the freezing. I'll also add that I really dislike the mushy, poorly-located power button and the unintentional screen rotations (especially the occasional 180 on wakeup.) However, the combination of weight, shape, size and tactile buttons are gamechangers for me. These elements make up 90% of my experience of using this device, so they're the stuff I'm going to talk about. The fact of the matter is, since receiving my Forma the amount of time I spend reading has increased by quite a lot, despite already owning a small collection of eReaders.

why wouldn't you? i do and plenty of them. did Kobo on promotion photos for the Forma show everyone the stripe/band down one side of the screen? or any promotion photos showing the KA1 blotchy Comfort Light problems? or for the matter any promotion photos of the Clara HD showing the light bleed issue?

i have as many electrically devices as anyone else and (ALL) of them work 100% perfectly as indeed they (SHOULD) do.

if you are happy/wanting/willing to settle for not just imperfections but very very poor quality control issues/problems then that's entirely your choice. it definitely (ISN'T) mine.

i also would add/suggest if you had my mind set all the (BRAND NEW) devices you buy would work perfectly just like mine do

Heh there was a guy on these forums whining about PWM and it being the doom of the Forma.

When confronted with claims that the issue couldn’t be reproduced and that even if it existed it wasn’t as big a deal as was being made out due to some 40 years of advancements in LEDs he threw up his hands and said none of us understood anything while trying to prove his case with random forum posts for entirely different devices. He went so far as to make a poll, the results of which further crush his attempted claim.

Glaring imperfections and poor quality control, yeah, I would return the device.

Problem, an e-reader (or smartphone or tablet or laptop) that's perfect for me (in terms of features, hardware, software and price point) has yet to exist so I have to content myself with what's available. I have gripes with all of them. It's just a matter of choosing what gripes I can live with.

i agree entirely it's an individuals choice to decide what gripes as you put it are or aren't acceptable.

all i do is highlight/point out issues that certain Kobo ereaders obviously/clearly do have and are there for all to see.

everyone is entitled to make their own subjective choice/decision. if they are happy with the Forma with the added band or the Clara HD light bleed or the KA1 blotchy Comfort light then that's fine it isn't my money
