2 things on calbre epub editor

(1) If I have an epub where the files are in directories, and I create a new .html file, it creates this in the root rather than the text subdirectory. The editor does know the epub is organsed into subdirectories, so should be able to do the ‚right‘ thing??

(2) If I have a picture in an epub and right click on it (windows) the option appears to replace the file with another one. But I couldnt get this to work, I selct the rrplacement file and ok, but the file in the epub is still tje old one. Maxbe user error?? But i dont know how. Deleting and importing the new image wofks fine of course

1) The editor makes no assumptions about how you want to organize files. That is not going to change. I prefer my tools not to make assumptions like that.

2) Works for me. Steps I tried:

- right click the image
- Choose replace with
- select some image
- Double click the replaced file to view the image, it has changed

in addition, there is a tool called Arrange into folder that can help you.

Regarding 1
I can see what I wrote was unclear sorry. the order of events is (1) use the tool ‚arrange into folders‘ (2) at some subsequent point, create a new html file. Now, the editor ,knows‘ I have arranged the files into folders (if you try to use the tool a subsequent time, it will say files are already in folders), so maybe it should be clear to the editor that I have expressed a preference for where new text files should be created.
Regarding 2
Well that‘s the exact sequence I went through!! Or thought I did!! I‘ll check it out and report back

The intension for this tool was fine tuning at the end of a process.

I can understand the whish but I am also more happy to have no "general" assumptions on folder structures. Well, in the end it is "only" a click to get everything in line (I still remember the time we didn't had the tool)

Take a look on Sigil if this is a show stopper for your work. Both applications have pros and cons depending on what is important for you and I knew not less people like myself who use both apps depending on what is need to do.

You are asking that the editor assume for you that you want the new file in a particular folder if all other files of that type are in that folder. That is not an assumption that is universally true. I prefer my tools dont make such assumptions, if I want a file in a folder, I put there explicitly.

Or you are asking that the editor change its behavior based on what actions you might or might not have taken previously. So if you do arrange into folders it will guess folders and if you dont it wont. That kind if hidden state is very bad in tools, it makes their behavior unpredictable and hard to reason about.

I think your statement is based on assumption not fact.

With the scenario you described above, it will NOT say 'files are already in folders'. If your newly-added html file is not in your preferred folder structure then running 'Arrange into folders' a second time will put it there.The Editor does not 'remember' you already ran 'Arrange into folders'.

Just try it again and see.

First Jackie: You misunderstood the point of my statement. This was not to say that AFTER I add the new html file I cannot use the tool, but to demonstrate that BEFORE I add the file, my preference is known to the editor and hence usable when creating the new html file. I can assure you my statement is right, as I have used this tool frequently. I make mistakes but I dont write claims based on assumption ;-)
Secondly everyone: thanks for the feedback on the point. It already took far more time than it‘s worth!!! I thought it was a valid point - actually I still do - but I do fully understand Kovid‘s reason so that closes it for me.
Thirdly just out of interest - I used also Sigil for years, before the Calibre editor appeared it was the only game in town, and it still has several unique features so I do still use it often but I would say it‘s 80-20 calibre these days.
Finally regarding the pcture replacement thing, I didnt use calibre today, but can i just ask kovid: did the replacement file have the same name as the one in the epub? Maybe this was the problem? I was exporting the jpg, editing it, and right vlicking to reimport it over the old version. Couldnt get this to work, had to delete and reimport. I can remember i had this problem before so i thought, this time i‘ll memtion it.

No it did not have the same name, but I tried it with the same set of steps and it worked for a file with the same name as well.

Ok replacing the picture
For me is completely reproducible under windows 10
Replace with file does not work when propsed replacement file has exactly the same name and extension
What I did:
Saved cover.jpg from one book to hard disk
Opened another book to edit
Right click cover.jpeg (note jpeg not jpg) replace with file, select cover.jpg and hit Open, replacement works fine i see new image
Close book without saving
Rename cover.jpg on hard disk to be cover.jpeg
Open same book to edit
Right click cover.jpeg, replace with file, select cover.jpeg and hit Open, this time Doesnt work, the image in unchanged
Definitely reproducible!!

Not reproducible for me. The only thing that does not work is if you happen to have the image already open in the preview panel or in an editor tab, that tab has to be closed and re-opened.

Ok you are right you have to close and reopen the tab to get the new preview (not just click to another tab and back again)
I guess this is because the preview generator doesnt realise something has changed

Ps the necessity to close and reopen the tab only happens if the filename is the same, in all other cases the preview will refresh, so maybe this still counts as a minor bug, albeit in the previewer rather than the file replacement functiin?
