i just came across an author whose books are each in two series:
there is one passing reference in post #15 of an old dead thread here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...ultiple+series Wikipedia lists his bibliography as being various differently named various trilogies, but each book is also part of a series in an overarching legend of Drizzt series so e.g. Icedale [1] is also legend of Drizzt [4] silent blade [1] is also legend of Drizzt [XI] thus there appears to be a sensible reading order to follow https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R._A._...e_bibliography now I have not gotten into reading them all yet so I don't know how fussed I am likely to be about library management , but are there other readers / collectors of this author and if so, how are they managing their series info within calibre please? |

I use 2 systems:
1)The (main) Calibre {series} is Hierarchical . Legend of Drizzt.Silent Blade[4] I also have a Custom (series type) column {#split_series} I use this 2 ways: alternate numbering: Legend of Drizzt [9] or Alternate series (crossovers) Joanna Brady &J.P. Beaumont Note I adjust Preferences: Searching: Grouped Searches (tab) and Similar Books (tab) to search both I also use this (indexed at 0) for hierarchical levels that would get to deep (would cause file path issues). <the series parent layers go here > and I drop those in the main {series} |

idea 1 looks useable, thanks
so silent blade. which is book 1 of paths of darkness quartet and also book 11 of Drizzt would be Legend of Drizzt.paths of darkness [XI] and iceland [1] would be legend of Drizzt.Iceland[4] i do not want to add custom column(s) to entire library just to accomodate one author there is probably a fan site for that author somewhere that explains all the series linkages and naming systems. for true fans there probably several orders to consider e.g. the order he wrote them, the time period each is set in..., the suggested reading order ( if some are prequels... ) Last edited by stumped; 10-30-2018 at 02:26 PM. |

I dont think you can use both numbering (roman and regular) in a Library.
![]() (I just copy and paste from where ever into the book editor) While custom columns fill the screen, and take a bit more processing, The (relational) DATABASE only gets entries for books that have data. Calibre is NOT a flatfile DB |

calibre's regularnumbers are fine for me. I was looking at the actual book covers which use roman numbers , like IX for 9 and XI for 11
if you look at his amazon page, most covers have a legend of... number but some just say " a Drizzt Novel" so either he could not remember where it slots in or has left it as an exercise for the reader ![]() E.G. Timeless: A Drizzt Novel (Forgotten Realms: Drizzt) Kindle Edition and finally, just when you think you have it all sussed he outputs books starring Drizzt which are not tagged with Drizzt at all but are a different series: e.g. Hero (Homecoming Book 3) Kindle Edition The saga of dark elf Drizzt Do'Urden ..... |

It would be useful for a number of books, to be able to have multiple series associated with it. Perhaps with a simple comma or semi-colon separator? Too many authors are cross-pollinating characters from one series to another, perhaps to do a bit of boosting of sales of the poorer producing series. I'm seeing this regularly in mystery series. (Michael Connelly, J. A. Jance, etc.) I'm not particularly enamoured with the workaround of creating a custom column.

Stumped,
I have finished most of the series and did so almost exclusively on my TabS using UB Reader. I have to tell ya, I would simply find the sequence he wrote them in and just use that as a 1-45 or w/e he's up to now. He's written them rather linearly so there's something missed if you go out of order. I get the general sense that our readers aren't set up to handle that architecture of writing (**multiple sub chronicles of 3-4 books each**), even though it's not that uncommon. I had nothing but issues trying to get things sorted and just had to kinda remember where the hell I was at most of the time. Some of the other books deal more with Wulfgar/Bruenor and their subplots. I won't ruin anything for you, but the one's your talking about are still related, with Drizzt being only a side character or (in at least one book I can remember) just being mentioned. So, yeah, it'd be nice if there was a way to overlay a number or something on top of the cover or in the corner. PS: RA Salvatore, to my knowledge, wrote all of his books for Drizzt; no cross-pollination for that Dark-Elf. Last edited by Evocatas; 11-02-2018 at 10:35 PM. Reason: **Edited for clarification** |
