E-ink webpage news
On eink.com they are talking about releasing their own prototypes of devices (which they allready released the 6" 800x600 version, 3bit greyscale = 6 grey levels).
The prototypes they hope to release around Q1 2009 are 4bit (or 16 grey level) versions: 5" 800x600 8" 1024x768 9.7" 1200x825 here are further specs: • Gumstix™ single-board computer, Marvell XScale® PXA255 processor • Linux operating system pre-installed • Multiple input-output options: Bluetooth, serial over USB • MMC/USB card (512MB card included) • Expansion board with four software-configurable buttons here is more info: • E Ink Vizplex™ imaging film • EPSON S1D13521 display controller •16-level grayscale image support • Fast update speed - pen input, text input, basic animation and pop-up windowing • Linux software platform • Display utilities and sample code • Bluetooth and USB connectivity • Battery operation • 2x Li-ion battery with over 4000 mW of power. Technical data can be found here: http://www.eink.com/kits/amepd.html http://www.eink.com/kits/broadsheets...eet_041408.pdf Thoughts may be that manufacturers like Sony, netronix, irex technologies, and Jinke Electronics might copy a great deal from the prototypes created by e-ink; definately improve on design, and maybe come up with few other tricks on their sleeves. I'm not a very 'bluetooth' fan, but it might be that the next gen will have bluetooth; maybe good if it would support bluetooth keyboards. Also, we don't yet know what 'fast display update speed' means.. |

I may be missing something, but I'm pretty sure this news is very old (half a year or so). Not to be rude or anything, but those specs match my memory exactly, so I can't spot anything new.

Indeed, those developer's kits have been around for a while. Also don't forget to check the prices!

Wait, shouldn't 3 bit be 8 shades of gray?
000 = 0(1) 001 = 1(2) 010 = 2(3) 011 = 3(4) 100 = 4(5) 101 = 5(6) 110 = 6(7) 111 = 7(8) |

The 4 bit 16 shade versions are to be released Q1 2009. They are not the same old ones. These are new.

so still no sign for new technology. How long has vizplex been out?
I think other technologies will be catching up soon then. |

A bit over a year. The first production Vizplex device was the Sony PRS505, which launched on 10/02/08 07.
E-Ink devices have been out considerably longer than that, and so far other technologies don't seem to be doing much in the way of catching up, not so you'd notice, anyway. ![]() |

I was answering athlonkmf's question about how long Vizplex (the current generation of e-ink) has been out, and to his thought that other display technologies were catching up to e-ink.
Does that make it any clearer, ProDigit? |

Wasn't the Sony 500 the first production eink device in Oct 06? Or was it just the first eInk ebook reader?

Neither.
Back in '03 the EBR-1000EP, AKA Sony Librie, was the first e-ink device, and dedicated e-ink reading device. ![]() And the iLiad was shipping several months before the PRS500. ![]() |
