Pre-buying Questions

Hi all,

I'm currently still using a Kindle 3rd Gen with the hardware keyboard (that I got back in 2010), but after someone else sat on it and I replaced the screen it's been a little bit buggy. It's been great for reading books but otherwise the user interface and ability to organise books is horrendous.

Does the Clara HD show the book cover when you put it to sleep? Since getting my kindle I'm terrible at remembering book titles as I never get to see the cover for more than a couple of seconds.

How much customisation can you do to the home screen? I'm not sure I'm ever going to want the recommendations section for instance.

Is the bottom placed power button very sensitive? I often will lean my kindle up against things when I'm laying down to read and worried that might keep putting it to sleep or turning it off.

Anything I should be looking out for when compared to a kindle or another brand? I've read that the kindle has a better dictionary, don't feel like that's personally a deal breaker. Same with some people mentioning that it has light bleed, I read with a lamp on so not sure I'll even use the screen light that often.

Thanks in advance!

Yes.

Normally, you can only remove books from the homescreen. You can also change the text in the bottom left or remove the bottom row entirely with patches. The recommendations section won't show if you have two or more books open.

- You won't be able to read your purchases from Amazon unless you strip the DRM and convert your books.
- Is there any specific thing you are concerned about?

Just want to add that it is very easy to do. I own a Kobo and still buy my books from Amazon.

Thanks for the answers, think you've addressed my minor specific concerns. As long as I can read a book on it and connect it up to calibre I'd guess pretty much any e-reader would likely suit my needs!

The biggest problem with my kindle at the moment is that it's not displaying pictures properly, just get a garbled mess. Though it was fine before I replaced the screen. In reading around on the forum last night I did see someone mention that kepub formatted books you can zoom in on pictures. This would be useful when looking at a map, how do you actually do the zooming?

Personally, I think the Kobo devices has excellent support in calibre. Though, maybe I shouldn't be the one saying that

Double tapping the image will open in the image viewer. This has zooming and can pan around the zoomed image. To create the kepubs, you can use the KoboTouchExtended driver to do it on the fly when sending the books. Or do it via a conversion. The former is better if you want all books as kepubs, the latter if only some.

That's an odd issue (garbled photos). Just a quick comment about the Kindle 3, it also allowed (allows) you to zoom in on pictures. I'm sure it's not as advanced as newer readers, however.

If you live in the United States, you can often find Kindle 3s (Keyboards) for about $20 (with s/h) at Shop Goodwill (www.shopgoodwill.com).

You asked, "Does the Clara HD show the book cover when you put it to sleep? Since getting my kindle I'm terrible at remembering book titles as I never get to see the cover for more than a couple of seconds."

Actually, one of my favorite Kobo features is that the top of each screen shows the name of the book you're currently reading. I often switch from book to book as I read, and I find this very handy (although there's a patch to turn it off if you don't like it).
