Have you ever read The Wizard of Oz series? There are quite a few more books than the one the movie is based on, plus the three 'Wicked' novels by Gregory MacGuire...

How about alternate history? Try the 1632 series. The first few are available free.
http://www.webscription.net/p-379-1632.aspx http://www.webscription.net/p-378-1633.aspx Or if you'd prefer epic fantasy, how about the Deed of Paksenarrion. The first book of the trilogy is free here: http://www.webscription.net/p-587-sh...-daughter.aspx and the whole trilogy in omnibus is only $6 http://www.webscription.net/p-100-th...senarrion.aspx Or for Military SF/Space Opera, Honor Harrington's the one. http://www.webscription.net/p-304-on...k-station.aspx But I'm saving the best for last. Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series. Only a short from early on in the series is available free, but the rest is available in cheap omnibus editions. http://www.webscription.net/p-622-th...-mourning.aspx First two omnibus $5 each: http://www.webscription.net/p-85-cordelias-honor.aspx http://www.webscription.net/p-481-young-miles.aspx That lot should keep you going over the summer. |

I'll recommend a couple of really good series. First is the Honor Harrington series by David Webber and sold via Baen. The second is the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett. When you read the Discworld series, read it in published order. See the link below for the published order.

TOTALLY THE DRESDEN FILES!!! It's a series by Jim Butcher (the first is Storm Front). It's about a guy who is a wizard for hire. There are 11 books so far and they are like crack, seriously.
If you want to get an idea what they are like, it was a short lived TV show (good, but SciFi decided to cancel it). Anyway the episodes are available on Hulu. |

I finished Fool Moon a little bit ago and didn't really care for it that much. It irritated me in a fairly important regard (spoiler ahead):
Spoiler:
I really don't know if I want to bother continuing the series now, or if I should look elsewhere. The first novel was a bit more sparse, but definitely less frustrating to read. I've heard some of the later novels are good though. I also went through the first Jasper Fforde Thursday Next novel, the Eyre Affair. It is quirky but I rather enjoyed it a lot. Artemis Fowl series, I've also just read the first one, but some of the characters have grown on me, and I'm presently starting the second book. I can second some of the Discworld novels too. My favorites are the City Watch books, and the Death books so far. Sam Vimes and Carrot and Lord Vetinari are some of my favorite characters, in addition to cult favorites like the Librarian. |

David Drake's RCN series is a lot of Space Opera-ish fun and its got one of the more interesting female characters in Space Opera-- Adele Mundy, the librarian from hell.
John Ringo's frothy Looking glass series offer plenty of action and a fair amount of tongue-in-cheek humor. With, again, some fine secondary characters including a goth-girl super-genius with adult deficit disorder. Battle hardened marines quake when she says; "I'm bored!" And her kitty is a delight. >;-) Already mentioned: the Honor Harrington series and the superb Vorkosigan saga as well as the 163x series. Why not just hit the Baen.com free library and see what tickles your fancy? The Retief stories alone are worth the trip. |

I'm with JSWolf. Try the Honor Harrington series. Also, if you like historical fiction, you ought to try the Flashman series by George MacDonald Fraser. The autor has lifted a character from 'Tom Brown's School Day', Harry Flashman, and written a series of historical novels centered around him.
Although Flashman is a fictitious character, a notorious coward and womanizer, the rest of the stories are dead accurate. There are very funny and very educational. You will get an excellent insight into the Victorian era. Start with the first book in the series 'Flashman' and go from there. |

You might try some of the Ender's Game books by Orson Scott Card (definitely try Ender's Game if you haven't read it); I enjoyed what I read, but I found couldn't finish the series.
Ooh! The His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman, recommended with much urgency and no reservations. (Look for The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass, in that order.) This may be a good chaser to series like Harry Potter or Twilight. Also, though it's not technically a series, because it's so long and the characters are so appealing, I found myself mourning the end of Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson as if I'd just lost a lot of good friends in a bus accident. Then, there's always Douglas Adams... Last edited by Danny Fekete; 08-02-2009 at 04:54 PM. |

I second Ender's Game et al. Also, take a look at the Maximum Ride books by James Patterson. I think they are targeted at young adult, but they are really fun and entertaining. (At least I think so.)

If you are enjoying the Dragonblaster series, I highly recommend the several series written by Richard Tuttle. Go to Fictionwise and search by author name to get the complete list of books by Tuttle. The concluding book in his Demonblaster series is also due this fall. (My original note can be found here.) I'm currently reading and enjoying Dave Duncan's A Handful of Men series, which is available at Fictionwise. Last edited by rhadin; 08-02-2009 at 02:01 PM. |
