KA1+KSM9 - Cannt start USB

KA1 on latest fw - 4.9.11311

Trying to start USB "usb-->usb enable.sh" will result in (at most...) a very short blinking screen and that's it.

The fun part - once this happens, "return" will bring a very short main KSM menu :
"front light on
front light off
usb
wifi
toggle btw full and sort menu
power off"

"power off" at that will result in -
"cannot open file:
/mnt/onboard/.adds/kbmenu_user/txt/poweroff_info.html".

A short press on the power button at this stage WILL restart the KA1 into the KSM09 menu (so it does power off, but somethng happens to the file system during the failed usb start.

There is no problem powering off the KA1 from the KSM main menu any other time (including showing the 'Powered Odd" page.).

USB works just fine in NICKEL.

Ideas ?

Was this your first attempt to enable usb from KSM? Did it work previously and stopped working at some point? What happened in between? Or, if you never tried before, do you know what do expect? In the info box the message "USB support: disabled" should change to "USB support: enabled". The pc should then be able to treat the device as an usb storage device.

This is all expected behaviour. When you enable usb support the user partition will be unmounted. nickel, koreader, the power off image and so on are dependent on files located at the user partition.

Certainly not my first attempt.

I've the KA1 for quite some time, with KSM08 installed almost immediately after I've recieved it. No problems where encountered with KSM08.

The USB problem started (I don't recall if immediately or not) after KSM09 installation, somehow disapeared, and now it's here again.

And to your questions :
- it is certainely not my first attempt with KSM USB connection
- it used to work with no problems
- in between success and failure, KSM09 happened.
- "USB support: disabled" does not change.

Good to know.

If you like we can try to find the cause of the failure.
  • extract KoboRoot.tgz from the uploaded archive and install it
  • navigate to the usb menu and select: "enable usb log.sh"
  • This is not expected to work any better than "enable usb.sh" does. So you will have to restart the device afterwards. The only difference is that it creates a log file.
  • When the device is powered on again, copy the log file to the user partition by selecting: tools > ksm diverse.msh > copy KSM logs to user.sh
  • You should now find the log file in .adds/kbmenu_user/log
Attached Files
File Type: zip usb_enable_log.zip (555 Bytes, 221 views)

There are good news and there are ...

good news.

The first good news is that as of this morning USB in KSM09 (even before the installation of your tgz file) works flawleslly.

Nothing was done to the device - it was sleeping in the middle of Don Quichot (KOreader) as usuall, and unless it started worrying that the fearless knight-errant will come to my rescue, I can see no reason for this change.

The second good news is that I've installed the tgz anyway, and use the USB log option in the future, so if the problem returns, I can return here with some data.

@tshering - thank you.
