PRS-500 / PRS-505

I have only just found these forums so my first post..

I purchased a Sony PRS-500 on a business trip to USA in early 2007. Recently I have noticed that I am getting less and less page turns on a battery charge (I use the mains charger and have checked that I get the full 5.2 V dc). If not used then the battery self discharges in about 10 days. Obviously the battery is reaching the end of its life.

My questions are:
Is the battery replacable or does it require Sony attention?
Anyone any idea of the cost of battery replacement?
With the PRS-505 available from Waterstones, are there any major improvements from 500 to 505?

Regards

The battery is not designed to be user serviceable... however, There are a few threads where the correct battery was found if you are ambitious and want to crack the thing open.

The two major improvements are:

1. The Vizplex screen has more contrast (whiter background) and turns pages a bit faster.

2. The support for ePub files and Adobe ID DRM support for ePub and PDF files.

The screen's the main thing - better in low light & slightly whiter. Apparently it's the sort of thing that you might initially discount when first looking at the 505, but after a few days with it, you'd notice it is you switched back to the 500.

Different case clips & the 505 appears as a native USB device are the other basic differences, with the V1.1 firmware adding PDF reflow & ePub support.

Gwyn (Lydney, Gloucestershire - Let me know if you get to this edge of the county & want to see a 505, although I'd hope that the Waterstones in Gloucester had one.)

To finish the story......

I purchased a PRS-505 from the Sony shop on Tuesday last. No mains charger but I can use the one that came with the PRS-500. The 500 will eventually go on E-bay.

I thought that the 100 free classics on cd was a Waterstones only perk, but the cd is included with my 505 from Sony.

Thanks for the help offered in the replies to my first post.
Regards, John.

If you're interested in the classics, check out the "E-Books" section of this site, as the chances are that anything there is also available here with better formatting!

PRS-505 -- $150 -- to buy, or not to buy

1. I just got an awesome deal on Craiglist...a never opened PRS-500 for $80...my first real ebook reader...I've been using my Axim x51v for the last year. I LOVE IT!!!!

2. Sony just reinstated the $150 rebate on $299 purchase if you open a Sony Visa account...making the PRS-505 $150...also an awesome price.

Is the PRS-505 really that much better that I should upgrade, or stay with my PRS-500 for the time being.

Things I wonder about...

New technology....the $300 base ebook reader can last forever...I've got to believe that in the next year we are going to see PRS-505 capable readers in the $100 price range. So maybe I should wait...

Is the page on the PRS-505 that much whiter? Do I really need the USB storage option?

Help me out...if you have upgraded from a PRS-500 to a PRS-505...was it worth the price, or do you kinda think you would be just as happy staying with the 500.

Thanks....PghMark

Well, it has the better screen, slightly faster turn page, more built in memory, also support ePub format and relows PDF ebooks and Adobe DRM. Also, the 700 just came out which gives you once again more memory, faster page turns, touch screen, reading light and is $100 more than the 505.

If that is "better" for you is only a decision you can make.
