Just like the buses
Hi!
I got interested in these devices some time ago while doing some proofreading at Distributed Proofreaders, which prepares out-of-copyright books to be made available on-line in Project Gutenberg. That made me aware of the riches available in PG, but there wasn't any convenient way to read them. But, just as with buses, you wait for ages and then three come along at once; so now I'm here looking for information to help me choose between Sony Reader, Cybook and Hanlin v3, and no doubt for advice and support after I choose one. I'm less interested in paid-for E-books (at least until prices come down substantially) than in the free stuff. JohnCD |

Well -- all three get recommendations from their current owners. I'm a bit of a gadget-o-phile and would like to have one of each. I have a Kindle which is loaded with many books in the MobiPocket format. I bought a Sony Reader because there were a number of books posted here at MobileRead that were only in the Sony format. (I can be lazy at times and although I know I could go track down the source and build a MobiPocket version -- there are times that I just want to read and not have to wait until the building is done.)
So if you're looking at the library here -- you'll find more books in Sony format than in any other. If you are looking to *buy* books -- particularly current releases -- you may be better off with a device that supports MobiPocket since that appears to be the more prevalent version found in the various online bookstores. Also, I don't know of any public libraries that offer books in Sony format -- just MobiPocket and PDF. While the Sony can display PDF books, I think it might be difficult to read a PDF that was formatted for a larger page size. I've not tried it, but I don't know that the Sony offers pan-and-zoom options like you find on a PC. I could be wrong, though. |
