If I buy a Kindle DX on EBay..
Will I be able to use it? Can I either connect and download or side load books? I have to go old reader for phrase search across entire library but I want to make sure it will still work.

What do you mean by "phrase search across entire library"? I just searched for "oh god" on my Oasis and it came up with 52 results across all of the books on my device. It did not search the books in the cloud. I wasn't aware that the DX can search the books in the cloud?

No its just across your entire downloaded library on the device. As far as I know, Kindle is the only one that has that feature even though its no longer advertised as a feature anymore.
