Should my 3rd Kobo be an Aura One?

Hi group.

I travel a lot, mostly by bike and alone, and I like to read books. Thus an
e-reader is very good to have.

4 years ago, while in India, I made friends with an American couple who had a Kindle that they were often reading on. When I asked about it James advised me to rather buy a Kobo. So I did, an Aura 6". I must admit that I did not take very good care of it. I had no protective cover for it and just stuffed it in my day-pack along with many other things.

By the time I realised I really liked the thing I had already damaged the screen, and not long after the button for turning off and on jammed as well.

When I came home I quite soon bought an Aura H2o, and made a good cover for it. I liked that reader even more and was very pleased I had such a nice cover protecting it.

Then a few months ago, in India again, I had been reading some in my hammock and when I went back inside my room I threw the Kobo on my bed and it bounced onto the tiled floor. I did not throw it violently or anything different than I had done before, and how I would often handle my smartphone. Anyway it seems the screen cracked and since then will not turn either on or off. Maybe it landed very unfortunately or maybe it is extremely fragile.

Now I am back home and am thinking to buy another e-reader, possibly the Aura One. But it seems that the One does not have a slot for a memory card. I have several books I have bought and downloaded online, as e-pubs. They are already on the memory card I had for my previous Kobos. It would be a major setback if I can not have those books on a new e-reader.
I have also downloaded several old books from the Gutenberg project, also as e-pubs, some of which I have not yet read.

My dilemma now is if I should buy another H2o or the One?

I cannot really keep buying new Kobos every two years!

This thread should probably be moved either to the Kobo section or the Which One Should I Buy section.

As to your question, a Kobo is just as fragile as a Kindle. Ereaders in general are more fragile than a phone.

I don't baby my Kobo. But a fall on to a tile floor isn't good for any electronic device. Whether you get an H2O or a One, get a better case. Readers don't have Gorilla glass screens. They aren't as sturdy as your phone or tablet.

None of Kobo's current offerings have an SD card slot. If that matters, you might want to get another first gen Aura or a first gen H2O. And take better care of it this time.

I would wait until the Kobo Clara HD is announced. It will likely have the same tech, only with a smaller screen size.

"Clara HD"???? I don't like it. I hope that's some sort of code name. Of course, Doc Brown would probably love it.

There is a chance we could see a 10.4" Kobo device.

But I doubt it.

Hi, Albin! I heartily recommend the Kobo Aura One. Nice large screen. Overdrive library integration. Night mode. I've been very pleased with mine. I believe Overdrive has made inroads to India. If your local library supports it, a KA1 might be a very good investment.

I would just get the newer h2o model but if you have the money then go for the One but when you drop device all over the place then why get the most expensive model out?

The One has the most beautiful screen of any reader, hands down, but for you, there are a few extra considerations.

1. Battery life is much better on the H20 than Aura One.. (battery will depend on your usage, wifi, light level etc. but generally speaking, Aura One will last 15-20 hours, whearas the H2O) will last 24-30 hrs.) This might be a consideration if you have to easy opportunity to charge.

2. Raised bevel and the official cover has a closed flap, might provide a bit more durability for rough handling that the A1.


No current mainline reader in North America has a card slot anymore. Sorry. It should be easy and cheap to find a usb card reader device you can use to retrieve the contents of your card on a computer, and use the computer to transfer the books to a new device (not to mention keep a backup copy.)

I upgraded from the original H2O to an Aura One when the Aura One was first released and have been very happy with it. The device has traveled with me all over North America and the Malaysian Peninsula without issue.

As for the lack of an SD card slot, I must say that I haven't missed it. There's plenty of storage on the reader itself. What would prevent you from transferring the epubs on your SD card to the new reader?

With your active lifestyle, I would suggest going with a lesser priced device and include a good protective cover. Or, maybe purchase two cheaper priced devices and have one as a backup. Or, purchase drop and fall insurance. Some credit cards will give such insurance when using the card for the purchase. Traveling by bicycle would imply size and weight considerations too.

I have used the original H2O and now have the KA1 as the main. It is comforting to know if one were to get damaged their is the other fully loaded and ready to read. Both are a bit spendy in my opinion but I have been very pleased with each model. The KA1 was purchased solely for the larger screen estate. Best of luck for you and your decision.
