KUAL installation not possibel on 5.9.2.0.1 ?
Hi to all
I have jailbroken my kindle voyage (initial FW 5.8.5 -> downgraded along the post from knc1 https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=275877), installed KUAL but not succeded in starting it. I fiddled around with the current hotfixes and so on - with no success. When I activated the WiFi, the KV updated OTA and got stuck (update bar stuck at the position under the tree) . I could only reactivate it by resetting the device. The current state is: - I hope the jailbrak survieved the update process, but I'm not shure about that - the dummy install is not functioning - now the kindle runs FW 5.9.2.0.1 - and I cannot downgrad to a former FW - and I cannot install KUAL: "KUAL-KDK-2.0.azw2" in the documents folder does not appear in my book list... has anybody an idea, how to solve my problem thank's a lot |

@niem: You must use "booklet" version of KUAL (Update_KUALBooklet_v2.7_install.bin) since with firmware 5.9.2 killed support for "active content" aka "kindlets" (KUAl.azw2 = kindlet).
To install that bin file you'll probably have to use a version of MRPi that gets triggered via searching for ";log". The way newer generation of Kindle devices was doing from the day one. For more info take a look at spoiler for step #8 in jailbreak thread The part that goes like "KOA and KT3 owners". The same applies to KV, PW3 and other devices that have been updated to firmware 5.9.x. So if you already have latest snapshots version of MRPi you "just" have to copy that "Update_KUALBooklet_v2.7_install.bin" to "mrpackages" folder and run MRpi by "searching" for " ;log mrpi". It's little backwards: in the past you used to run MRPi from KUAL and now you're running MRPi to initiate installation of KUAL-booklet version ![]() Last edited by shamanNS; 12-30-2017 at 01:43 PM. |

Now make sure to (re)install hotfix :
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...68&postcount=4 The same way you installed KUAL bin. (copy to "mrpackages", install via MRPi). Do an extra reboot then check if the jailbreak is functional. |

Install a (.bin packaged) hack from MobileRead?
![]() You mentioned resetting your Kindle after it stuck installing OTA update. You didn't say if you installed hotfix after all that. If you didn't you should do it. Or you'll be coming back here on MobileRead after next firmware update to ask "what happened to my jailbreak, it's gone, why why". None of the steps in jailbreak procedure are optional. |

Hi, I've just update my jailbroken PW2 to 5.9.2.0.1 and I understand I now need to use the booklet version of KUAL to manage packages. Unfortunately I can't get the ;log mrpi command for MRPi to work to install the booklet KUAL. When I search for the command nothing seems to happen. I have tried reinstalling MRPi from the snapshots thread and that doesn't seem to help. I guess I'm missing something really obvious but have no idea what!
I've tried reinstalling the hotfix but that didn't help. Thanks in advance for any help! Edit : It's working now. Seems after installing the hotfix I was just clicking on the ;log mrpi in the past searches instead of retyping and clicking the arrow which has made it work! still no luck
I have tried everything mentioned above.
1.I install Update_jailbreak_hotfix_1.14_nomax_install.bin hotfix 2. get the KUAL-v2.7.2-gea85a19-20171125.tar.xz, and put Update_KUALBooklet_v2.7.2_install.bin into mrpackage directory, I removed KUAL-KDK-2.0.azw2 from documents directory 3. execute ;log mrpi in search bar 4. reboot my kindle, open KUAL , a blank screen shows up,, can't go back to homescreen , I have to reboot again, I try to open epub book , it shows `The seleccted application could not be started` my kindle is kt3 , jailbreaked before, it automatically updated to 5.9.2.0.1. I'm also curious as to how you solved this problem. My KOA was updated yesterday to 5.9.2.0.1. The jailbreak survived, and I was able to run MrPI via `;log mrpi` to reinstall KUAL 2.7, python, USBnetworking, and linkss, without any reported errors for the installation.
The screensaver hack works as-expected, as does USBNetworking. The KUAL booklet, however, doesn't function properly. As reported above, when I select the KUAL booklet, it opens to a blank page. The status toolbar displays as usual (where the battery status and time are displayed), and the device is responsive to orientation changes (flipping the screen as the device is flipped), but there is no way to exit the blank page without forcing a reboot. I've installed the nomax jailbreak hotfix, and reinstalled the snapshot versions of KUAL, the helper mods, to no avail. The KUAL booklet continues to act in the above manner. |

It seems pretty certain from the recent posts that 5.9.x broke KUAL.
One of our people looked into it for the KOA2 and found that Amazon/Lab126 has started to obfuscate the Java interface that the KUAL booklet needs to use. That change may have spread to the other models that run 5.9.<something>. There is a prototype of a proposed replacement for KUAL, but the author has not (yet) packaged it for people to try out. It is in a private github repository, so it seems clear that the author does not feel that it is ready even for public testing. Translation: don't despair don't remove your jail break with the 'Reset' button the problem is being working on (not by me, but by someone). |

If you have already been upgraded but are jailbroken and KUAL is important it should be possible to downgrade to 5.8.11 or another working firmware. I don't know if we have procedures documented for this, or if it is possible without serial port access. Dave |

As a related note, my wife's KV updated to 5.9.2.0.1, but on that device KUAL continues to work following a reinstall of the booklet package. |
