Hi,

What's the problem with sharing kobo image files ? afaict everything except Nickel is free software and Nickel is in the update files anyway.

What am i missing here ?

The firmware contains proprietary software. Not just nickel, but the Adobe RMSDK, Overdrive libraries and more. Plus other licensed files such as dictionaries and fonts. Distributing any of that without permission is illegal.

The firmware updates contain the same things. But, they are hosted by Kobo and supposedly only accessed by software created by Kobo.

Just out of curiosity:

Afaict all of that is found in the /usr/local folder inside fs.tgz.
I reckon creating a clean image can be done by
* wiping the serial
* wiping the first partition
* purging /usr/local from fs.tgz on second partition

I have my doubts on the ntx_hwconfig, but its not a very difficult tool to rewrite.

@OP: thread maybe better suited for development corner.
